They're for shady people and businesses that don't want others to know the real address.

And people who live in apartments.

To answer the question, option 1

Well, I live in a dorm, and I get my mail from a little box on the wall in the basement, so I think so?

My mail usually just appears in random locations. Either my landlord leaves it on the stairs, or one of my room mates will put it in my room.

I live in probably the most unique place here, as I live in an apartment above the Ottawa Curling Club. The "landlord" is actually the club manager, and my address is the same as the club's, with no apt. number.

I got a P.O. Box a few years ago when I grew tired of my roommate "accidentally" reading my mail.

I don't have to worry about that anymore, but I never cancelled my box subscription.  Plus (as mentioned above), if ever start a fraudulent business or acquire a stalker, nobody will ever know where I live.  I just need to stay away from the post office and I'm safe.

I don't receive or sent postal mail in Thailand, but back home I use the P.O. Box - however the only things I ever receive are bill collection attempts.

Street Address.

Also, PO Boxes are quite handy if you have trouble receiving your mail due to incompetence of the postman or suspect your mail is being heisted or you are recovering from identity theft and are leary of people knowing your real address.  The post office should have security cameras installed so it should be a secure place.  I live in an apartment, and it does come to a box, but the box is right by the apartment office, so I consider that street address.

Well, I thought that was implied by the way I started my reply.

Wait...are you saying that apartment dwellers are shady? Tongue

Street Address.

Used to get it in PO Boxes back when I lived in San Antonio though.
