Looking at the county by county results of Pennslvania in 1996, I'm struck by the fact that most of the counties of suburban Philadelphia and Western Pennslvania were close and how easily Dole could have possibly carried had his fortunes during the course of his campaign been better.

The same goes for Ohio also to some extent.

Clinton was a Southern Democrat. He's not going to play as well as a northerner in Northern suburbs. Also, these areas had been traditionally GOP.

The Philly suburbs were a lot less Democratic then.

Dole actually did come closer to winning the state than McCain did. So I assume all of the "McCain will win PA" people this year would've picked Dole to win it as well, right? Wink

No, McCain actually seemed to have a chance in Pennsylvania, unlike Dole. Obama had lost the primary big-time, and he made snide comments about how Pennsylvania voters were bitter to an upscale San Francisco audience. The polls were relatively close until the mid-September meltdown. Also, Bush was within 2-3 points in Pennsylvania in 2004.

Clinton consistently polled above 50% in PA in 96, until Perot started to gain.

Now that's something I d'like to see.
Pennsylvania voters running around in diapers while they are being chased by a bunch of dominatrixes (sp) with whips.
