I am getting sick and tired of being one of the only Democrats at my school. It isn't that big of a deal but it is just one of those things that annoys you every once in a while, like gential herpes. Whenever politics is brought up I tend to get pissy very easy with my everyone because I am outnumbered ridiculously. In my Debate class there are 2 other Democrats, 5 or 6 people who don't care and 15 super partisan Republicans. My teacher is a ridiculous Republican too(you know the types that read Ann Coulter). Yeah it doesn't sound so bad until you realise that we quite frequently watch political speeches. Guess which channel? Fox News of course, and I have sit through the "analysis" of people like Hannity. This would be okay if during the election season, people in my class weren't calling Obama a muslim, terrorist and if people weren't constantly defending Palin. The day after the election was over I wasn't near as happy as I should have been because I had to live through the idiocy of nearly everyone saying America is over because of our new ZOMG SOCIALIST BABY KILLER PRESIDENT(there was actually an article in our school newspaper published that accused Obama and his supporters of this). This continued throughout the school year with the lamest jokes I have ever heard been said of Obama and every single problem being blamed on him.

Yeah being a part of a tiny political minority sucks. I have lots of sympathy for Republicans that live in San Fransisco because of this. I wouldn't be surprised if some of you guys have or had it worse off than me though.

I couldn't imagine what it's like in some parts of the country being a Democrat.  Interestingly, despite Philadelphia's results, a Republican wouldn't feel so out of place here because the are Democrats with some conservative views.  Then again, I know only a few people with some far right views.  Only time ir can be a problem is going to a liberal college here.  I've had some professors where even my centrist views on things such as Affirmative Action and the death penalty warranted me to bite my tongue, but in my neighborhood those views are more prevalent even thought it voted Obama in the 60-40 area.  My liberal views on gay marriage and sometimes choice actually take a beating with some older conservative Catholics I know.  I even catch sh**t from some hardcore union people about being open to free trade, which for many is a no-no.  Sometimes you just can't win.

I have some difficulty, but San Franciscans hate a social conservative much more than they hate a fiscal conservative. In fact, two of the kids in my senior class (neither of whom are at all right-wing) got senior quotes from Ayn Rand & Milton Friedman.

Funny... we almost never discussed politics in high school.. ever.  Teachers just didn't bring it up unless there was a specific reason.  But here, nearly all of the teachers are Democrats.

same

Evil Mex, High School is only 4 years...after that you can surround yourself with Dems as much as you want.  Some of us are in the minority politically for our entire lives and don't have the option to move somewhere to get out of it.  We can go hide in the woods or we can live surrounded by people that think we're insane pot heads.

Consider this an excellent opportunity to learn about these types of people and how to argue with them.

Some of my best friends are strong supporters of the Conservative Party and Stephen Harper, ironically enough. Though they're more fiscal conservatives than social conservatives, considering how they're strongly pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, and all are pretty militant atheists. Though one is strongly in favour of strong law and order, like me.

I still tell them my opinion of Steevie Harper, despite all that.

Dude, you don't know lonely until you've tried being a moderate Republican.

Imagine being annoyed by all the things you are annoyed by... but being in the same Party with them.

Try being a conservative Christian Republican on the Atals Forum.

With all this whining and complaining, you'd think this forum is inhabited by a bunch of f****ts.

Oh wait...  Damn.

I was actually looking to disprove Coburn on this one, but I couldn't think of that many big conservative Christians on this forum outside of jmfcst, Keystone Phil, StatesRights, Vander Blubb, and maybe someone like BushOklahoma.

I kinda wish we had some more...there are a lot of liberals, moderates, and libertarians on this forum. Not too many social conservatives and Catholic-esque commutarians. Sad. Sad

My advice: stop talking about politics and just deal with it without complaining about it. It'll help in the end.

Given that Sam is mature in virtually every other respect, it should be obvious that his frequent usage of the word 'f****t' is simply a psychological defense mechanism.  It shouldn't take a genius to work out what for.

Considering this is the second or third time you've made this connection concerning one of my posts in the past couple of weeks, I have to wonder where your interests lie.  After all, one of the most predictable and common lines made by homosexuals at this forum is "You hate gay people, therefore, you must be a gay too."

But that's ok, I won't tell your wife and you don't have to tell my girlfriend either.  That is, unless you want to meet at the Casbar next Friday night.  See you then...

All I'm saying is that it's very suspicious that somebody can be having weighty discussions about global markets and international trade, and meanwhile will drop into random threads elsewhere and call everybody f****ts for no apparent reason.  It's the only thing about you that seems 'out of character', and therefore my implied suggestion is not a massive leap.

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

When I was in junior high school, and then in college, I was often almost alone - politically, and beyond that, well I was a fairly immature, rather driven "intellectual" (a term that in some ways now gives me a good belly laugh at the absurdity of it all. because there is so much more to life than politics, etc). Anyway, at that time, I was pretty a hardcore Pubbie. I loved it -- being out there in the ring with nothing but my own wits.  I didn't  mind being a minority of one even, and never have, really. I guess it is a kind of hard wiring in me (and I am realizing now that I have an aspect of my personality that gets off from time to time being a sort of "drama queen, which may have had something to do with it - it was kind of a "performance").

Anyway, I enjoy debating; perhaps precipitating  the other side thinking about things a bit more deeply, and other side giving me stuff to ponder, and for me, the shear joy of it all, enriched my life.

What was best, indeed, was when the other side, consistent with my values and conscience, caused me to change my mind. That means well, at least from my point of view, I gained new insights, and maybe, hopefully, a bit more "wisdom." What can be grander than that?

Got for it!

This is why I love being proven wrong.  It means you just got a little smarter....or at least a little less "wrong".
