What on earth has happenned there? It has gone from being very Dem to uber-Republican just in the last few cycles.

George W. Bush was the Republican nominee in 2000 and 2004, and Barack Hussein Obama was the Democratic nominee in 2008. It's that simple, when we're talking about a sparsely populated evangelical West Texas county.

They had no problem voting for McGovern and Mondale.

In 1972, Cottle County had 1135 votes and this past election it had 705. If you guys have never been to the High Plains before, understand that the vast majority of these counties are very thinly populated and are aging as any young person with ambition has to move to the cities. The combination of that and cultural conservatism, which stems the isolation that exists in these places, probably explains most of the increase in republican percentages. As a general rule, the less people a county has, the more republican it is.
