  • Govt spending in Canada was 53% of GDP in 92, now it's 39%.  The US dropped all the way to 33% by 2000 and is 38% now.   Next year we pass them.
  • In 1994 Canada's debt was 70% of GDP, now it's 32%.  We were down to 33% in 2001, but we'll make it to 60% next year and will likely top 80% by the time Obama's 2nd term is up.
  • Canada has had a surplus for ten years in a row.  The idea of a surplus is absurd in the US.
  • Pension plans are fixed and funded in Canada, discussing it by politicians is off limits in the US.
  • Only 41% of govt in Canada is controlled at the Federal level, it's 62% in the US and always growing.
  • Canada's corporate tax rate has been traditionally higher than the US's, not no mo'.  by 2012 it will be HALF what we have and individual tax rates are really close right now, will be even closer when Bush's tax cuts for the rich expire next year and if Obama adds any more (likely) theres will be lower than ours.
Mostly from here.

Sure they aren't as free when it comes to guns, but that's a wash because they are more free with pot and whores.  Is it time to start looking for work in Alberta?

Just a note than those numbers are false now. Conservative party has spend all the sulplus. Next budget is in a deficit 50 billions.

Most of the libertarian direction was given by the Liberal Party who was in power from 1993 to 2006. Polls say than they will win next election.

Aye, this year will be a deficit.....a small one.  In the middle of a horrid economy.  Meanwhile the US's is well over a trillion.

Well, that will be the worse deficit of Canada's history. At least, in Canada, when we cut taxes, we cut spending, unlike the Republicans, who cut taxes and increased spending, which is ridiculous.

Increased spending is (almost) always ridiculous, but yeah, I agree with you.  That's why I don't vote for "lesser of two evil" Republicans and Democrats.

Canadians are apparently a lot more sensible when it comes to spending concerns. Now if only they would come over to the right side of the gun issue. Wink

Thank you Stephen Harper for a competent economic management in this crisis, you're so great.

Canada has plenty of gun owners. Watch Bowling for Columbine.

Sure, they are "more right" than the UK or Australia, but they still have room to grow.

I still imagine the pro-gun movement there is not as strong as in the United States. Still, I need to check out Canada at some point. Smiley

Canada truly is an amazing country. Nice weather, free healthcare, a socialist party, and American culture and language! What's not to like?

Stephen Harper, the Conservatives, Alberta, Langley-Abbotsford, certain parts of all provinces except Newfoundland (and maybe PEI and Nova Scotia), and OCTranspo.

The problem is that the US government wastes a lot of money on useless or way overpriced sh**t in the defense, banking, and health care industries. Canada can't possibly be as stupid with their spending as the US.

Obviously you have not used OC Transpo!

haha, actually, I don't know what Gael's problem with them is. Sure, they're not the best bus service in the world, but give them a break. I understand he was frustrated with the delays of the number 2 bus, but didn't the split the route up? Did that not help?

Oh well, downtown is the best place to be. I only take the bus to see my lady friend in South Keys, since everything else is in walking/biking distance Cheesy

Are Canadians really that restrictive when it comes to guns? I guess they don't allow semi-autos. Is it really that oppressive?

Canada definitely seems like a great place to live, except the weather is horrible. Vancouver ain't so bad though. I can definitely see myself living there.

I wouldn't go that far Wink  I also wouldn't tell a Canadian that their culture is similar to ours.  My uncle's wife is Canadian and I had a fight with her once when I tried to convince her there is no Canadian culture (and she won the argument).

Don't say than his culture is American to a person from Quebec. Never. You couldn't believe than somebody could be so angry.

She's actually from Ottawa.  English Canada is just as proud of their culture as Quebec is actually Wink  I was in Vancouver with my girlfriend last year and the first thing everyone would tell us was how terrible Bush is (Harper too, but Bush mostly) and how much they hate America.
I love Montreal though.  My brother used to live in Vermont and I had been there a couple of times (he would visit every weekend).  It's probably the most european city in North America and I loved that.

I know thn English Canada is proud of his culture, but less than Quebec. Canadians hated Bush and because of our voting system, two-thirds of Canadians hate their Prime Minister. It's a shame than somebody than only 33% voted for him can become the Prime Minister. Especially when the remaining 67% is more to the left than him.

Splitting the 2 only worsened the problem, ironically enough.
