I bring an amendment for the bill to read as follows:

1. The Federal Communications Commission, or any other federal agency, shall not have the power to regulate the content of television or radio broadcasts, so long as those broadcasts do not receive a portion of government funding or subsidies.

I don't know how I feel about it. I want a vote on this amendment to see what the other Senators think.

I oppose the amendment.

This is a way for the government to take control of the content of media by offering subsidies. Either the government should accept that they have no power to regulate the media, or they shouldn't be offering subsidies in the first place.

We have guarantees to ensure that even such regulations would not be to an abusive extent. However, if these industries accept any subsidies, there should exist a deference to certain standards.

Nay. In addition to the concern about the government subsidising the media in order to regulate it, I think it may give rise to some challenging circumstances. If the Government purchases advertising time in a media outlet, does that constitute a subsidy? What if the advertising didn't provide meaningful information, would it then constitute a subsidy? If there is a different answer to those two questions, what test could the Supreme Court apply as to whether the information was "meaningful?"

In short, government advertising could complicate matters. Coupled with the concern of regulation through subsidisation, I cannot support the amendment.

Aye

Simply because I dislike this bill's blanket dismissal of media content regulation.

What sort of amendment would people accept? This wholesale dismissal of content regulation is a bit much.
