States will restrict it to varying degrees.

NC, in the short term, would be iffy.  It would likely give the local Republicans a wedge issue that might get full control of the state legislature.

Actually, that might be the case throughout the south for the Dixiecrats.

Plenty of southern Democrats would vote for a bill banning abortion.

Can we all agree, regardless of where you stand on abortion, that Roe vs. Wade is a bogus ruling found no where in the Constitution.

"The building blocks are already in place to recriminalize abortion," said Nancy Northup, the center's president.

Yes!!

We actually have a reasonably good rating from NARAL.

Specter is pro-choice (and from Eastern PA), but western and central PA is heavily pro-life.

Many key Dems are (our Auditor General and soon to be State Treasurer Bob Casey - the state's most popular Dem) pro life, too. Add PA to that list.

Actually, New Mexico would be at least moderate risk and quite possibly high risk, although I haven't seen any polls on it. But given NM social conservatism on other issues, and the fact that we banned partial-birth abortions *before* the feds did - with around half of the Democrats joining almost all the Republicans in the State Legislature, I'd say there's quite a good chance of it.

Mantra: NM has a large number of Democrats, but not a large number of social liberals.

Think of all the thousands of people who's lives will be saved when Bush wins this election.

They'll be pretty dang happy he did. Good thing no one killed me.

Not if Rendell's still governor!  Please also remember there are pro-choice GOPers in the legislature as well.  I doubt it highly.

Does anyone know which states still have abortion prohibitions still on the books which aren't being enforced because of Roe V. Wade?  When they did away with the Federal 55mph speed limit, those states that hadn't encoded it into their own laws were able to raise the limit right away while others had to wait for their Legislatures to enact higher limits if they wanted them, so I imagine the same would apply here.

How many states had it legal before Roe vs Wade? How many did the people actually vote for?

Nah, I'm pretty sure I've read about how 57% of Washington voters approved of it in 1970. And Roe vs Wade was 1973.

There were quite a few rules though. Minors couldn't get it without parents consent, one had to be a resident of the state, and one could only get it within 4 months of conception.

Roe was so contrary to the law that it had never even occured to anyone the USSC would force states to make abortion legal. John Kerry was even surprised.

I know there were some exceptions

If I was president, I would just tell all the states to ignore the ruling because I wasn't going to do anything to enforce it.

Absoultely not. Can you please point to somewhere in the constitution that would support your arguement?
