Healthy students become healthy adults. I would like some healthy food promotion for the home too, although we can't dictate to parents how to feed their kids.

Well, a bunch of Senators went on about how we absolutely needed PhysEd in the School Standards bill because we need to be concerned about kids' health. Readily and widely available healthy school lunches are a relatively cheap and effective means to that end.

Never hurts to have workers handling the job of putting these things in and maintaining them, either.

Besides, there is a myriad of other healthy food. Why limit it to salad?

Doesn't have to be, you can propose an amendment expanding the scope of the food involved if you like. I was just inspired by a stricter version of this bill in the Pacific region, and found it fairly harmless and efficient.

Salads are perfectly healthy. It provides students an alternative, educates younger children in middle school on proper healthy eating habits, and creates a fair bit of jobs. It's a win-win-win I think Wink

I mean, it an ok idea, but I think things like this should be up to local school district not the ferdual government. But it his bring debate to the senate.

I support regional rights and all, but I don't support a region's right to impede on "no brainer" progress. The Southeast once voted down an initiative that would've banned some unhealthy foods and beverages. I happen to think something like that is rather silly to do. If we can't leave it for people to decide, then that's why the federal government exists.

Allowing unhealthy things continue like that ends up a drain on the federal government's resources in the end, anyhow.

Marokai, can you explain the wording on "federally subsidized lunch program"?

If we're only talking about spending money on salad bars in schools, then I'm perfectly fine with it.

Although if we actually don't have a subsidized school lunch program for poor students then we need one. Tongue

Oh yes, I certainly agree. I just wanted to make sure we were on the same level.

I'd like to offer an amendment to this bill that would establish such a federal school lunch program.

as a substitute:
School Lunch Bill:

Section 1: In order to guarantee that every pupil in Atlasia has access to a nutritious and high quality lunch, Atlasia shall provide subsidies to needy families that otherwise would have trouble financing them.

Section 2: Subsidies shall be provided variably based on income.
Families making up to $15,000 annually shall be eligible to apply for 100% compensation. Families making greater than $15,000 but less than $20,000 annually shall be eligible to apply for 50% compensation.

Section 3: Every Middle School & High School in Atlasia with over 450 students will be required to equip their cafeterias will full-service salad bars by the end of the 2010-2011 school year.

Section 4: The Senate appropriates $3.5 billion to each region in additional school construction & lunch funds for proper distribution.

On further thought, I guess that this is alright. As long as certain agents feel the need to involve the government in the citizenry's expenses, it is only proper to minimize costs.
