Palin was America's sweetheart. Then she opened her mouth.

No. He wouldn't have won anyways. I don't think having Palin on the ticket lost him any states. Conservatives voted heavy for McCain in Indiana, because of Palin. Obama would have won it more comfortably, if not for Palin.

What exactly does that do for you if you lose a greater amount of independents?

I've lost interest in the forum and I've wasted far too much time here.

To those I consider forum friends, it's been nice and I hope to keep contact in some form.

He could have lost some Independants. But good Republican turnout was more important for the McCain camp. Palin fired up Republicans, and got people going door-to-door for McCain, something Romney or Pawlenty couldn't have done.

I think so, but I regret her even more.

My grandmother, a Republican, said Palin would be better on a comedy show.

Not that McCain regretted it, but that he regretted it right away.
First of all, he chose her before anyone else knew, and knew several days in advance. If he automatically regretted her, he could easily cancel out, with no worries. Secondly, for the first month or so after Palin was selected, she gave him a chance of winning. Also, McCain doesn't hate conservatives. You can't get in his brain, so he doesn't know that.

The key to his post was "like her." Despite the fact that he had to pander to them in 2008, he has never been a friend of the far right. This is the man who called Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell "agents of intolerance" years ago.

I think he understood that he'd never be able to get away with putting a fanook on the ticket.

Oh, they could've doctored a marriage for him.  After all, it sort of worked for Crist.  Tongue

While Ridge would have been his best running mate (and easily the most likely of the three), I do think Graham would've been better than Lieberman.  And I doubt he would've pissed as many people off as did Palin, gay rumors or not.  I do wonder, though, if gay>Muslim in the minds of fools.

BTW, I don't think I've ever heard "fanook" before.  Is it an NYC thing?

I think he does. Whatever he says now, McCain clearly wanted to choose Lieberman, but didn't have the guts to go against the party establishment and his campaign staff. The irony is that if he had selected Lieberman, the religious right would have accepted it pretty quickly. Indeed, shortly before the Palin selection Huckabee clearly said that he would support anyone who respected the GOP's stance on abortion (implying that all Lieberman had to do was to make appropriate assurances about judges).

The whole Palin selection was nothing to do with abortion or women's rights, but was to do with fiscal conservatives wanting to geld, as well as brand, "Maverick" McCain.

He does regret her, but he shouldn't.  She isn't the reason he lost.  If he wants to blame someone he should blame George Bush.

He should regret the fact that he gave this nutjob the chance to be, even theoretically, a heartbeat away from the presidency.
That was the most reckless, unpatriotic and cavalier political act by a presidential candidate in a long time.
