Would you rather live in North Korea or Saudi Arabia?

Which country would you rather live in? Assume in each case that you live the life of a local and not an expat.

I'd go with Saudi Arabia because it actually has a decent standard of living. This is mainly important in that 1) you would have access to a steady supply of food and 2) you would be much more likely to have AC in the summer than you would to have heat in the winter in North Korea.

Wow. I expected Saudi Arabia to win, but I didn't expect it to be this lopsided. The only concievable advantages North Korea has are that alcohol is legal there and women aren't required to wear abayas or be accompanied by a close male relative at all times.

Actually now that I think about it, I probably should have asked North Korea vs Taliban-ruled Afghanistan (ie impoverished socialist totalitarian state vs impoverished Islamist theocracy)

Actually now that I think about it, I probably should have asked North Korea vs Taliban-ruled Afghanistan (ie impoverished socialist totalitarian state vs impoverished Islamist theocracy)

In that scenario I'd have still probably gone for the country ruled by Islamic Fundamentalist, even if it is an indisputable war zone.

It wasn't always easy to leave the USSR, it's pretty easy to leave Saudi Arabia.  If I was forced to stay in either, sure, I'd pick the USSR.  But in the real world, I'd still go with SA for no other reason than I can leave it.  Keeping people locked in your country is one of the worst things a nation can do short of actual physical harm or individual restraining.  I'd rather pay 90% taxes and have the ability to leave than pay 10% and not have it.  It's more important than religious rights or speech rights.  It even beats gun rights.
