Yes. Although this doesn't mean Ahmadenijad couldn't have won it fair and square.

true, but the provincial vote totals strongly suggest rigging.

Yes, of course....although it would still be "rigged" without actual election fraud.

The rigging was as much of a slap in the face as the comment that there are no gays in Iran. You almost have to admire the arrogance.

Of course.  What's surprising is how brazen they were about it.

It's hard to immagine that a fraud can be enough to bring Ahmadinejad a 33-points margin if he had lost the election. It would mean an ubelievably massive and hyper-organized institutionnal fraud as in Russia or Algeria.
No, the worst of this horrible election is that a mad reactionnary was legallly re-elected after having been legally elected.

The numbers yes, the raw winner no.

As much as we might hate him, a majority of Iranians voted fpor him - just not two thirds.

The question isn't whether or not it was rigged, it's how badly was it rigged.

Yes. But on a positive note, millions of Iranians are now registered to vote in Chicago's next municipal election.

There's really no way of knowing who won. This isn't a Mexico 1988 situation where they decided the count wasn't right and changed it. It's pretty clear that they made up numbers in a lot of places; they decided the election wasn't worth their time. I don't think we'll ever see an accurate count.

Stay Republican.

On the Middle East, Jimmy Carter is dead wrong.  He is committed to take the anti-Israel position, probably more out of a reaction to the support Israel enjoys among American politicians than anything else.  He wants to stay relevant, so he attacks Israel.  His books are filled with misstatements, and ad hominem attacks on Israel, with no facts to back it up.  Then, when he's invited to debate the issue, he declines, because he knows he can't back it up.

so basically: criticism of Israel = wrong?

Because Mousavi doesn't have majority support in Iran, and Ahmedinejad does.

I'd also note that everyone with the green avatars for supporting Mousavi's campaign is being a bit ridiculous. He isn't a reformer, he's part of the establishment and has the blood of thousands on his hands.

Things change. No one is supporting the Mousavi of old. It's a support for liberty.
