Dark Green = unwinnable
Medium Green = unwinnable by any likely candidate

These states, plus DC (which Reagan never won) represent 190 electoral votes which the Republican party has essentially no chance of winning. Note that in every case Reagan or Bush I was the last Republican to win them.

Technically, there is no such thing as an unwinnable state; it merely takes a large enough victory in the popular vote. That said, certain states are virtually unwinnable.

The largest landslide ever recorded in the popular vote was a margin of 26.17% in 1920, and the largest since the Great Depression was 23.15% in 1972. The only Obama states safe from a Republican landslide of either proportion, adjusting 2008's margin, are Hawaii and Vermont. Of course, Hawaii would have been much closer had Obama not been the Democratic nominee, so I would say the only virtually unwinnable state for the Republicans is Vermont.

That said, several other states are close to virtually unwinnable, such as Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware, and California, though each could switch in something short of an unprecedented landslide.

There were 3 political realignments 1912 concerning the income tax, 1948 concerning Civil Rights and 1976 regional realignments, Dems the Gold Coast with Jimmy Carter.  The Reagan and Nixon landslide victories only meant that we were in between those political realignments.  The Bellweather states were always NH, IO, WI, NM and OH.

That's why are put my map the way it is.

There are no states that the GOP can't win. In a Republican friendly climate, with a terrible opponent, a Republican could win 50 states (but still not D.C.).
The same works the other way. If it is a Democrat friendly climate, with a terrible opponent, a Democrat could win 50 states (and D.C.).

But not Nebraska-3.

This question is interchangeable with what states are now totally unwinnable for the GOP, interestingly.
