I know that there's no real way to find out, but I want to see what people think. What percentage of different sports fans vote for the Republican\ Democrat in an even election?

My Predictions:
Football fans: Republican 55, Democrat 45
Basketball: Democrat 75, Republican 25
Baseball: 50-50
Hockey: Democrat 85, Republican 15
NASCAR Racing: Republican 90, Democrat 10
Golf: Republican 85, Democrat 15
Tennis: Not sure, but I'm guessing Democrat?

NASCAR and Golf are pretty wildly popular. I imagine the split would be near even.

Darius, I think you're right in regards to STEREOTYPES, but not reality. The fact is that the major sports are so popular, with such divers fan bases there really is no correlation. In fact hockey is the "farm-boy" sport in Canada, so it might have more conservatives. However politically these are my views:

Football: conservative, blue-collar suburbs.

Basketball: Liberal, black, urban

Baseball: Moderate, traditionalist, rural

Hockey: northern, progressive, college kids

NASCAR: southern, conservative, religious

golf: wealthy, white-colar, conservative

No one cares about soccer, seriously. Unless of course you're a highschool kid or a soccer mom.

We don't have many soccer fans here in the US, lol. It's a good question though, I'm thinking that American soccer fans would probably lean towards Democrats.

I doubt that the figures are nearly as polarized as is suggested on here.  (Especially basketball... remember there is a such thing as college basketball)

All the non-Caribbean Hispanics form the bulk of Soccer fans in the US, so yeah.

Lol, song coming up on internet radio just included the line "Can't go back to Tennessee, that NASCAR Country's not for me". Song I never heard before called Ruby and Carlos by James McMurtry.

Hockey fans (of which I'm one--GO PENS!!), like the players, are overwhelmingly white compared to other sports. Plus the game expanded heavily outside the rust belt over a decade ago. Any Democratic lean is heavily overstated here.

And it's an expensive sport.  But also consider the "3M states of hockey"- Minnesota, Michigan, and Massachusetts are heavily Democratic.  I'd say about Democrat 62- GOP 38 with a stronger Dem lean in the farther Northern states and about even in the mid-Atlantic.  "Hockey parents" here have to be fairly well off.

True,  I wouldn't say its as Dem as some of the suggestions, but the 62-38 seems pretty accurate.  I think much of hockey's base tends to be middle to upper middle class liberals.

Ehh, liberal to libertarian I'd say the base is.  Another thing is in the NY/NJ/PA area to consider is a lot of the best hockey schools are Catholic prep schools, which other than the Jesuit based ones, are usually pretty conservative.  Like I said, it's about 50-50 give or take in the mid-Atlantic because of this.  Other than the Catholic preps, the best schools are usually the high tax base suburban public schools which tend to be more libertarian, if anything.  You don't see too many frozen ponds here in the winter cause our climate is narrowly in the Subtropical zone so the possiblity of seeing "District 5's" like in Mighty Ducks just won't happen here.  The poorer kids tend to go football, basketball, and soccer.

And when I played back in the 1990s, there was a lot of alumni and politician support to make us the cheapest program in the area.  I also skated with Mediocre CCM Black Tacks as opposed to tbe Bauer 5000's a lot of the preppy kids had..

I can only comment on hockey as you can tell.

One thing is probably for certain in football and basketball.  Pro fans are definitely more Democratic while college fans are definitely more Republican.  I would think Pro football has a narrow Dem lean, while basketball has a strong Dem lean due to it's urban nature.  College football and basketball fans are definitely strong Republican outside of the West, Midwest, and Northeast/Mid-Atlantic and probably tossup/lean GOP in those regions.

Baseball is almost impossible to call.

I agree that college football fans are strongly Republican.

I disagree about the college basketball statement however. College basketball fans are definitely more Republican than the NBA fans, but I'd still say they vote Democrat 55-60%. PPP did a poll during March Madness which showed that UNC fans were actually quite liberal. Duke fans were a bit more conservative, but still more liberal than the electorate. College basketball is very popular in the Midwest (a lean Dem region) and the Atlantic Coast (VA & NC especially). In the South, college basketball is more popular among blacks than whites, which would mean more Dems watching. I think the only region where college basketball fans would be more GOP is in the West, but even then, it would be barely GOP (52-48).

One thing most of you haven't taken into account is that sports fans tend to be male - who tend to be more Republican than the general population.  Outside of basketball fans (who skew more African American than other sports fans), I think a majority of sports fans are probably Republican, less so for rich man sports like tennis and golf than for blue collar sports like NASCAR, football and hockey.

True sports nuts - those who go to games - are probably more white, male and Republican than casual sports fans.
