Any free trade agreement without environmental and worker protections will have my opposition.

I would welcome the inclusion of a provision regarding environmental protections. On the other hand, I will not support worker protections in a free trade bill.

What sort of 'protections' would you be willing to vote for? I'd like to bring up something so this isn't entirely unfettered.

Write something up and we can go from there. I'd like to see what you come up with.

That is a fair point, we need to see what is being proposed.

If this bill was being proposed some 20 years ago, there would be a case for both South Korea and Japan with regard to worker protections. However the market has changed and our manufacturing rivals are to be found, on the whole, elsewhere in the Pacific region.

Well, quite frankly, I don't know what to propose under "environmental protections." We could prevent littering, or industrial waste disposal or something. But I wouldn't know how something like that could be executed or even written.

I'm a little saddened that there's such opposition to worker protections though. Yeah, who needs those, right?

Our workers need them, sure. But you distort comparative advantage and will hinder the ability of developing nations to progress by imposing strict workers' rights on them.

Since nothing has been done in 6 days and it looks like nothing is coming: I hereby open up a final vote on this bill. Please vote Aye, Nay or Abstain.

Nay

I had no idea how to write or enforce environmental protections, and workers' rights weren't going to get through no matter what, sadly.

This bill has enough votes to pass. Senators now have 24 hours to change their votes.
