In 1964, then incumbent President Lyndon Johnson goes through three names for his Vice President for the 1964 Election. These names would be Dodd, McCarthy and Humphrey, Johnson would decide with Eugene McCarthy as his runningmate.

The 1964 is a victory for the Johnson/McCarthy ticket but trouble arises as the war over in Vietnam goes downhill as the Johnson Administration quickly has to in a sense "shut McCarthy's mouth" on a regular basis as he becomes more outspoken about the "folly in Indochina". McCarthy and Johnson would reach a head as Johnson would try and forcefully shut McCarthy up by secretly threatening him that he would "destroy any future politics" for Vice President McCarthy.

VP McCarthy resigns from office and says "to many differences" between him and Johnson to work together. Soon both President Johnson and VP McCarthy declare there candidacy for the Democratic Nomination in 1968. Many other possible candidates unite around McCarthy as there "Anti-Johnson" candidate. With this McCarthy wins nearly every popular vote primaries but Johnson racked up support from the party bosses and concentrated on non primary state delegates and began to easily gain the upper hand.

The Democratic Convention was one of the dirtier yet as Johnson won but alleged irregularities appeared here and there. With this, former Vice President McCarthy declared his candidacy on a "Peace Democrat" ticket for the 1968 General Election.

The Republican Nomination goes to former Vice President Richard Nixon like OTL with a struggle with Reagan and Rockefeller in the early balloting.

For another blow to the Democrats, George Wallace announces his candidacy for President under the "American Independent" banner for the general election, sighting himself as the "True Southerner" in all of this.

So how does the election play out? How does the electoral map look like? Discuss, with maps if you wish.

The Republican Nomination goes as the same as OTL with former Vice President Richard Nixon wins the nomination easily.
Nicon did not win the nomination easily in OTL. Just one state kept Reagan and Rockefeller from stopping Nixon on the first ballot.

Alright I'll change that, thanks.

Johnson was a spent force by 1968, drug down by the disaster in Vietnam.

McCarthy capitalizes on Johnson's weaknesses and wins many Democratic states.

Wallace is strong in the deep south.

But Nixon promises peace with honor in Vietnam, and takes advantage of the division in the Democratic Party, and wins a solid victory.

Nixon                     323
McCarthy               142
Wallace                   45
Johnson                  28
