I'd check www.apartmentratings.com, and at least read the reviews for the complex and the other properties of the management company (if there are any.)  Seems like not checking ratings of any sort invites ending up with obnoxious management even if the place is superficially nice.

For finding availability and current prices, BRTD's spot-on.  The Internet isn't great about that unless you're looking for roommates or subleases on Craigslist, although there's some.
