Alberta...most rural ridings are about as dark blue as you can get, but there are some exceptions:

Crowfoot:

Wild Rose:

The north...all the cities were still Tory sweeps:

I know Brandon has a uni which the Greenies won, but how did the Greenies do to so well there (15% or so)? Surely the uni doesn't account for all of that.

According to Wikipedia, the Greens spent nearly as much as the Conservatives in Brandon and far more than the NDP or Liberals in 2008. Whereas they spent $15.50 in 2006 (lol). That can make a big difference. If all the signs in Brandon were for the Greens or the Conservatives, you can imagine where the anti-Conservative votes went.

Great, thanks!

I had noticed earlier in glancing at the polls that Niki Ashton won some Native polls in Churchill, but that map's pretty impressive.

And I guess we now know where the Sikhs of Abbotsford live Tongue

That's actually Macleod, by the way, not Crowfoot.

Looking through this thread, I'm wondering if there's an alternate solution to the election-mapping conundrum; maybe something subtler along the lines of tag clouds and the like--i.e. not just colour-coding according to poll winners, but according to the support for *all* parties; it may take a lot of effort to figure a properly "ergonomic" colour-gradation formula for all of that, but I think it's worth it, esp. in zones like Alberta where it's all a cloud of winner-take-all Tory blue...

It'd be difficult to show support for more than three parties at once, unless something clever could be done with layers (not something I know 'owt about).

It looks like pundit's guide has maps of every riding now, with polls. They're not shaded though. They also have the 2000 election which is really interesting.

Where? I couldn't find it on the Pundits' Guide.

Select a riding, and go where detailed results are. Above that, there is some thumbnails. There is Results for Results, Financials for money spend by the candidates, Census for some census data, "Google Maps" to see the poll map colored, "Poll-by-Poll" for knowing how polls each party won and EDA to know the district associations. Only 2000 and 2008 elections are avaliable for now.

Thanks!

2000 is particularly interesting for the purposes of where the NDP vote went in the 90's.

This seems to be a yet-unexploited opportunity, though it takes a lot of research and scrolling through long election results tables at www.elections.ca.

Examples:

Compton-Stanstead and Sherbrooke

Brome-Missisquoi

Has this been done before?

Wow, my maps are stunningly deficient. They make nice mini-posters for the wall above my desk, though.

I wish I had that software...

I know it's kinda been done, but I've decided to do Ottawa-Orleans, where I live.

Liberal vote in Ottawa-Orleans is apparently largely Francophone now, but from working on this map I've noticed that newer developments (the south-east in Avalon etc, south of Innes Road in Chapel Hill South, some parts of Beacon Hill-South/Cardinal Heights) are more Liberal than average, which is kind of weird. Maybe the new people there are government employees or something, because high-growth suburbia tends to vote Tory in the 905. Tory areas seem to have older houses, are more Anglo etc.

...and yeeah, my poll voted Liberal.

homelycooking, some of those software are freely avaliable on Internet. At least, they were last year.

Hashemite, you'll be happy, the same maps are now avaliable for the Quebec. Precincts maps for the same software than federal ridings. On DGEQ website, if you want to know.

I started working on it. But stupid DGEQ thinks it's nice to put all polling divisions in the province in the same Excel file (emphasis mine). It's a major hassle to sort through all that stuff to find the constituency in question.

But if somebody knows how to use excel-CSV files like that to automatically plug in numbers into a GIS software, it could be really quick to get a province-wide poll map.

high-growth suburbia tends to vote Tory in the 905.

Ottawa too (think Barrhaven and Kanata). However, those are western suburbs. Eastern suburbs have the French factor, and Orleans is probably where french suburbanites are settling.

These maps (results by municipality in Quebec, 2008) are better than the ones above.

Done so far:
Levis-Bellechasse
Beauce
Megantic-L'Erable
Compton-Stanstead
Sherbrooke
Shefford
Brome-Missisquoi
Richmond-Arthabaska
Drummond
Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot
Saint-Jean
Beauharnois-Salaberry

Soon to come:
Bas-Richelieu-Nicolet-Becancour
Montmagny-L'Islet-etc.
Vaudreuil-Soulanges
Lotbiniere-Chutes-de-la-Chaudiere
Far east ridings (Gaspe peninsula)
