Gee. Maybe a compromise - just striking the "plantations"?

I haven't seen any evidence that "plantation" in R.I. had any of the connotation of slavery that it had in the south. It appears that R.I.'s connections to slavery were via the slave trade and individual smallholders and had nothing to do with "Providence Plantations."

Am I the only one who had absolutely no idea that "and Providence Plantations" was a part of their official State name?

"Plantation" in New England meant something completely different than in the South. Even DU thought this was stupid.

That's gay.  I didn't know there were that many black people in Rhode Island to pander to.
It's not that there are many, it's that it's their country now, and not yours. If you're not prepared to live under Black rule, you should look for ways to emigrate. I can see how that might be problematic, as no country will want to have you, but I'm sure you'll find a way.

Aw. It's not like the Providence Plantations part was offensive. I liked it, actually. And it made it the state with the longest name. Sad

Besides, if they're gonna change their name, might as well be something cool. Like Badass Island.

Or 'Xtreme Island, sponsored by Doritos'.  That would be a good name.

I knew, but it is one of those "civil rights" issues in which you really have to want it to think there is a problem.

You don't need slaves to have a plantation.  This is the kind of "angry Black issue" that makes me roll my eyes at "Black leaders".  Who cares?  Its a part of the states history.

It's like people who think that failure to pass the Voting Rights Act, would mean black people can't vote anymore.

I knew that it was originally "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations," but had just assumed that the name had already been changed sometime over the last two centuries.

Anyway, like most of you, I'm neutral/think changing it is ridiculous, considering that it is the state with the largest per-capita budget deficit and they really should be worrying about other things.

Because I read it and post there. There was a thread on this, and everyone was opposed.

Surely the question should be, does anyone on Atlas care what "DU thinks"?

I'm surprised.  I thought one of the most common "state trivia fun facts" about Rhode Island was that the smallest state has the largest official name.  It's the one that always showed up in my books about the U.S. states when I was little, anyway.
