It wasn't quite  black and white distinction, and I'd have put the transition date as more like 1781 than 1801.

^ What he said. Jefferson sounds like either an incredible hypocrite and/or capable of the most unbelievable cognitive dissonance everytime I read about him, but you can't deny he was an interesting fellow.

Still voted negative though.

I don't understand your new found affection for Jeffferson since he would be a Paleoconservative like Ron Paul or Pat Buchanan by todays standards which you have a distace for.

It's not a new affection; he wrote the Declaration of Independence, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, the Louisiana Purchase, founded UVA, etc.

Well, the point was that sometime between the Revolution and his term as President he ceased to be as good as he was.

Positive as far as Presidents of that era go. He was pretty weird too. That's always a plus in my book.

Neutral, he was a hypocrit on Slavery. He was also a horrible Governor of Virginia. He betrayed his own political philosophy to purchase the Louisiana Territory. Even used the financial system that Hamilton had created and he had strongly opposed to fund it. He did write the Declaration and was a passionate fighter for our independence.
