Sorry, I posted a thought on that on the super tuesday thread above.

I went to Vermont last week and the only sign of politics I saw was a guy sitting on a bench with both a Kerry and a Dean sticker.

This is really cool and surprising news.

Is it unusual for four candidates to win primaries?

Unusual, but not unheard of.  I think 4 won primaries for the Dems in 1988 and 1992.  Can't sware to 1992 though.

1992 really had 5(!) winners

Harkin, Tsongas, Kerrey, Brown and Clinton

That seems impossible now days, with nationalized winner-take-all politics news.

It's weird to think that two days before the IA caucus I was gonna vote for him. I don't think i'll miss him, but I'm not exactly happy to see him go, if you know what I mean? He was basically a good man Smiley

He did a LOT for the Democratic party, whether he had won the primaries or not.

But I'm really glad to see him take one.

That's exactly how i feel! The media and my friends hated him, but his secular independent message struck a tone with me. Although he wasn't my first or second choice if I could vote, I would hire him as my spokesman, and that is exadtly what he was. I can't cope with the fact that he has been so supressed. At least he helped the party.

No, what is sad is that in a nation of 291648352 people, the best we can come up with is Albert Gore and George Bush for candidates.  Ought to be a source of humiliation for every red-blooded Yankee Doodle Dandy.

And you don't wanna get me started on Howard Dean, pal.

It's not unusual at all that four presidential candidates win states, that is, during the democratic nomination process. The republican one is less of a contest.

So when it comes to the democratic primaries and caucuses since 1972, here are the facts:

1972
7 candidates won states (George McGovern, George Wallace, Hubert Humphrey, Edmund Muskie, Henry Jackson, Shirley Chisholm, Wilbur Mills)

1976
9 candidates won states (Jimmy Carter, Mo Udall, Henry Jackson, Frank Church, George Wallace, Hubert Humphrey, Robert Byrd, Adlai Stevenson, Jerry Brown)

1980
3 candidates won states (Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy, Jerry Brown)

1984
3 candidates won states (Walter Mondale, Gary Hart, Jesse Jackson)

1988
5 candidates won states (Michael Dukakis, Jesse Jackson, Al Gore, Dick Gephardt, Paul Simon)

1992
5 candidates won states (Bill Clinton, Paul Tsongas, Jerry Brown, Tom Harkin, Bob Kerrey)

2000
1 candidate won states (Al Gore)

2004
4 candidates won states (John Kerry, John Edwards, Wesley Clark, Howard Dean)

In 1996, of course, Bill Clinton was unopposed.

In 1976, this happened:

Jimmy Carter won around 25 states

Frank Church won Oregon, Montana, Utah, Nebraska and his native Idaho

Henry S. Jackson won New York, Massachusetts, Alaska and his native Washington State

Hubert Humphrey won his native Minnesota and North Dakota

Jerry Brown, "Governor Moonbeam", won Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Nevada and his native California

Mo Udall only won Wyoming, Hawaii and his native Arizona, but came in a strong second behind Carter in many contests

Racist George Wallace won Mississippi, South Carolina and his native Alabama

Robert Byrd won his native West Virginia

Adlai Stevenson III won his native Illinois

I should add that this time around some states had more than one contest, so the question about who won what could be answered in a slightly different manner.

There also were a couple of other canditates, among them Birch Bayh, Senator from Indiana between 1963 and 1980. His son, Evan Bayh, is a current Indiana Senator and former Governor and right now one of the strongest VP candidates, since he could bring some Midwestern states into the democratic column. It sure won't be easy, but he could win Indiana and Ohio for Kerry.

A moderate Midwestern democrat on the ticket would also be a plus in states like Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, all important battleground states. And if Kerry wins most of the Midwest he actually doesn't need to win anything in the South.

Glad to see the guy won something I have tremendous respect for Dean… if not for some of his partisans who often come across to me as very closed minded and dogmatic… he reinvigorated the party and especially the internal debates within the party in much the same way as figures such as Goldwater, Helms and Reagan did in the Republican Party… having said that I am heartily glad now that he is not going to be the nominee… as I think Kerry is a solid and strong candidate however I have this nagging sense that he is a “Democrat Bob Dole” but lets push that to the back of my mind…. In truth I’d say even in the worst case scenario Kerry would do better than Dole did in 1996 having said that this time around there is no Perot and the nation is even more polarised…

I don't think he ever announced that he was running? He just got a draft movement going and won a lot of sympathy votes. Or at least that's what I thought. Byrd and Stevenson were never serious contenders, were they, they were just making home state runs I think.
