Wrong thread, and the President's approval ratings don't necessarily rub off on the VP. For instance, Nixon lost in 1960 despite Ike having around 60% approval ratings.

Yea the same can be said about Eisenhower who would've easily beaten Kennedy in 1960. Bush won in 1988 but look at who he ran against.

1960 is remarkably similar to 2000. Nixon and Gore didn't fully use their party's popular incumbent president (Nixon didn't because of Mamie Eisenhower's request, Gore didn't because of Clinton's scandal) which led to their narrow defeats. Nixon would have beaten Kennedy by 2-3 percent had Eisenhower been allowed to campaign extensively the entire season (Which would have exhausted him physically and mentally), and Gore would have won somewhat comfortably had he used Slick Willie.

I remember Clinton campaigning a fair amount in 2000, but probably didn't go all out because Hillary Clinton wanted to run in 2004. Otherwise she wouldn't have moved to NY for political purposes.

Keep in mind that Gore wanted to be his own man. This is a character trait of his that began ever since he first entered politics. In 1976, when he first ran for the House, his dad (a former U.S. Senator) offered to campaign for him and help him fundraise, but Gore said no, since he wanted to be his own man. Also, many people voted for JFK and Bush Jr. despite their approval of the incumbent President because they felt that Nixon and Gore lacked Ike's and Clinton's charisma and excitement. Thus, I'm not sure Ike and Clinton would ahve helped their VPs too much had they campaigned more for them.

Yeah, I admit he kinda screwed up intially with the recount by asking for a manual recount of only a few very Democratic counties. Still, Bush Jr. screwed up too by asking Katherine Harris and the Supreme Court to stop the recount althoughter without ordering a new one. Also, the 2000 election wasn't supposed to be that close in the first place. Gore was supposed to win easily (or at least but a narrow yet comfortable margin) due to the good economy and lack of foreign wars.

Yeah, that moment probably cost him the election.

Ike did campaign for Nixon, but only for the last two weeks of the campaign. Also, the only time Ike (accidentally) mocked him was when he was just too old and tired to remember any immedaite ideas that Nixon proposed that he implemented as President. Ike didn't do that on purpose.

Ike was joking too when they asked him that too. The liberal media was just starting to conduct their schemes and today they are in full force.

That's ironic, since it was Bush who was doing the personal space invading during the 2nd debate in 2004.
