Good move. Maybe we can finally rid the lousy school system of revisionist history.

Peter Marshall's "history" books are a complete joke.  His is the "revisionist" version of American history.

Yeah, let's get rid of all those references to negroes and Mexicans that poison the minds of our lilly-white, corn-bred youths.

Rev. Marshall is a mega HP.

His book, The Light and the Glory has been adapted for use in homeschooling settings by Bob Jones University.  Whether it is still being used is unknown to me...but I read the "conservative" homeschool curricula in the early 90's...when (was it the first Bush administration or the Clinton administration?) proposed new, national history standards for public schools.  The hew and cry from the religious right was deafening.  James Dobson devoted hours of airtime to the issue.  Eagle Forum sent me stacks of poison pen letters about it.

So I had a panel discussion with a number of Evangelical Christian professors from midwestern Universities and asked them...

A).  What they thought of the federal government's proposed history standards?

and

B).  What they thought of the homeschool and religious right movement's choice of alternative curricula...specifically, The Light and the Glory.

They (Dr. Mark Noll, then of Wheaton College; Dr. Stephen Messer of Taylor University and a professor from Huntington University -- whose name escapes me) reviewed both.  They were unanimous.  They gave the federal government's proposed history standards grades of A or A-.  And the scores for Marshall were D, F and F.

Three reviewers, appointed by social conservatives, have recommended revamping the K-12 curriculum to emphasize the roles of the Bible, the Christian faith and the civic virtue of religion in the study of American history. Two of them want to remove or de-emphasize references to several historical figures who have become liberal icons, such as César Chávez and Thurgood Marshall.

WTF?Huh??  They want to remove Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court Justice and champion of civil rights from history books?  The man argued Brown v Board!  These people need to be sent to Guantanamo so we can beat the crap out them before we deport them to North Korea.

This is just disgusting.  The hypocrisy of it all is mind blowing.  I'd rather not hear about 'legislating from the bench' and 'brainwashing our children in school' from conservatives who support this crap.

If you want God in your school, then form your own school and pay for it yourself.  If you can't stand the constitution's protection of both my and your religious freedom, then move elsewhere.

Word. Federalism is awful. What little good it does is far out-weighed by the bad.

The problem is, that while it can be used for a successful push for liberty, it will almost invariably end up ineffective in the long-term: social conservatives outnumber "decentralist" libertarians by margins of probably ten-to-one in most regions of the nation, and so by continuing to support it, libertarians in America have become nothing more than the useful idiots of those they absolutely hated not even six decades ago. Unless libertarians begin amassing in specific regions of the country, Federalism will never suffice as anything more than a stop-gap tactic, and it must be replaced.

If statism means supporting civil rights, freedom of religion, and a quality education for all Americans, then I suppose I am.
