Huckabee will be a force to be reckoned with in 2012, and adding a fiscal conservative Senator would rally the GOP, plus with the likely economic state in 2012 *high inflation, high unemployment*, Huckabee's economic credentials will be of great significance.

I actually think, if Obama's approval rating is like it is today (50%), or lower...a Huckabee/Thune ticket could be the strongest ticket out there.

Huckabee: 286
Obama: 252

(With 2008 EV)

I think Huckabee would sweep the upper midwest and great lakes with the help of Thune, and probably pull in other critical swing states...but not quite Pennsylvania or Michigan.

Although I like Huckabee and Thune myself, I doubt that the ticket would win so easily, even with the situations described above.

With 50% approval rating, I think Obama would still win. Petraeus would be a great VP candidate, in my opinion. Thune would be too, but I fear this ticket would alienate moderates.

Popular Vote:
Obama/Biden: 51%
Huckabee/Thune: 48%

A 50% approval rating probably means a tossup election. In this case, regardless of the winner, he probably recieves no more than 300 electoral votes.

Culture war (an extension of Nixon's southern strategy which alienated minorities from the GOP) is likely to be of decreasing effectiveness in coming cycles.

With tossups.

Best guess for the tossups:

Thune, a VP candidate from an electorally-small state, delivers the Dakotas. Obama essentially trades Indiana and North Carolina for Arizona, Missouri, and Montana.

Popular Vote:
Obama/Biden: 53%
Huckabee/Thune: 46%

Since when is Thune a fiscal conservative?
He is one of the biggest porkers in the Senate, and that says something considering the competition.

A more polarized election, with a clear Obama victory.
Excessive social conservativeness may erase political profits the GOP may take from recession, unemployment, deficits, international crises, etc

Sorry, Huckabee is not winning Wisconsin, Iowa, Virginia, or Colorado (probably not Florida or Ohio either) if Obama's approval rating is at 50 percent. Thune doesn't help in Wisconsin or Iowa.

Agreed. Then again, they already were in 2008.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee needs to abandon his regular post at Fox News Channel before he can become a serious candidate for Election 2012. My guess, at this point, is that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will win the 2012 nomination in thanks to a slate of contenders without the look and a number of others who self-destructed in order to clear the path for nothing-but-b.s. Romney.
