Added state numbers.

Chinese people don't seem to like political parties much.

Jews in lightly populated conservative counties where they are few in number percentage wise as well, would seem to have blended in, haven't they? Granted the sample error is large for such a small one, but so far, it seems to be a consistent pattern. I guess the real test will be when we see what the Jewish numbers are in Orange County, which has about 150,000 Jews.

The traitor Jews in LA county have obviously voted for Obama by a large margin. D:<

Orange county could be a bit of a wildcard, I guess.

Putting aside your invocation of the "T" word, that would be part of the fitting into the local pattern, no? What is interesting about LA, at least LA city itself, is that I suspect upper middle class Jews and WASPS vote in very similar patterns these days -  which is very different from when I was knee high from a grasshopper.

Middle class Jews vote conservative nowadays in LA?  Things must have changed dramatically in the short time that I haven't lived there. Tongue

I think Torie is saying that the GOP has collapsed with wealthy urban Protestants, which is pretty obviously true.  If you compiled a comparison of the nation's urban country clubs over the past 20 years, it would be very bloody. Tongue

I had Lake through L.A. up, but I backspaced.  Grr.

Interesting how the age break-down is working versus current voting patterns.  Of course, a lot of these rural Democrats aren't voting Democratic much anymore.  In registrations, though, that makes for the youngest voters being the least Democratic.  On the other hand, in Marin County, Republicans aren't even breaking double digits among those under 25.

The Jewish numbers in Kern County are pretty extraordinary. Maybe they are Jews 4 Jesus?

I am skeptical of these numbers. They claim that all these "hick" counties are 3-4% jewish while marin having far higher % than LA. These numbers are way off.

The self-provided voter identifications are wrong?  How?  Tongue

I mean, Los Angeles County passed Proposition 8.  Obviously, it's not all WASPs and Jews.  Marin having the highest percentage of Jews seems very reasonable to me.  It's an almost uniformly affluent county.  LA County ain't.

Unless I fundamentally misunderstand how they collected this information, I don't know how they could possibly be off.  Jews in L.A. lie more?  "Everyone in L.A. lies more!"

Edit: That or the ethnic abbreviation "jew" stands for something other than Jews.  I still have no idea why CA would track Jews but not blacks.  Mysteries all-around.

I had no idea there were that many Jews in such places as Madera, Kern, Fresno, Kings.

Surprises me, too. Perhaps it's like how there are no parts of New Jersey or Connecticut where there isn't at least a small number of Jews... some people will always diffuse out from the main urban centers. Las Vegas has a relatively large Jewish population, including the mayor and congresswoman.

Also, Jews vote in higher percentages than the general population, especially in places with huge numbers of non-citizens and people living in poverty like the Central Valley.

I think that could be so. I once read that Fresno has 2,000-2,500 or so Jews (which is fairly reasonable for a 2% electorate factoring out the non-voters), but of course they seem to have blended in fairly well. I lived where they likely would have lived and only encountered 2 or 3 that had said they were in past ten years.

I HAVE BEEN UP IN MARIN AND LIVED IN THE IN LA MOST MY LIFE AND COULDN'T NOTICE IT UNLESS THEY ARE A LOT BETTER ASSIMILATED THAN THE ONCES IN LA. I STILL THINK THE NUMBERS FOR A LOT OF COUNTIES ARE WAY EXAGGERATED.

In addition to what previous posters have said, this would have over 15% of Los Angeles County whites being Jews versus about 5% in Marin County.  Admittedly the number of rural Jews surprises me, but that's not unreasonable.

Not to mention, you didn't answer my question -- how could these self-reported numbers be wrong?

How are you inferring the 15% Jewish figure for LA County again Alcon?  Well, I see that the white non Hispanic population for LA County in 2007 is 29%, so I guess I get the source numbers for your little equation.  Smiley  Man,  how things have changed.  But I like LA a lot more now, than when I was a kid. And so it goes.

Well, since we have Hispanic and most Asians already, I just took the "Other" percentage and assumed a break-down based about on the '08 estimates for black, whites, the other Asian demographics and other ethnicities...well, it's rough.  But it's ballpark and I think it demonstrates the point well enough.  Tongue

A white person in Los Angeles probably knows at least twice as many Jews, on average, as a percent of their social group, as one in Marin.  Or so goes my theory.
