Obviously not, as long as it is their choice to wear one.

I mean, the pseudo-feminist/legislative critique of them, for all of it's lameness, probably is most persuasive in response to your clause here.  I'm sure it's obvious, but it argues that it's not really a choice due to intense familial pressure.

It may be the case, but I don't see what role the government should have in what is ultimately a family and community matter.  As long as no harm is being committed against these women (i.e. genital mutilation) I see no reason for the government to interfere.

I mean...this question will definitively place in the bottom of all of these polls, if not the very bottom, and deservedly so.  I was just pointing that your jusrification was the one position of strength for those on the wrong side of the issue.  Smiley

The argument, which I have no business in defending even in a devil's advocate position, is that there is a harm committed against the women, of course, similar to locking her up.

Of course, the idea of making them illegal is prejudiced, sexist, bigotry, and anti-freedom...

maybe I'm just hanging out in a country where I see them several times a day

If it's not a problem, I don't see why they should be banned.  Places with a need for security can ban face coverings of course and private places of business should be able to keep people out for the same security reasons.

Are they that much of a security threat?  Maybe.  They'd probably be more threatening if that sort of fundamentalism didn't shun women...they're not about to commit suicide for some dozens of virgin women waiting for them in heaven...I assume they allow US prison visitors to wear them, no?  And airplanes too?  Same level of patting down, right?

No.  I hate them.  And I do question whether it's the woman's choice to wear them. So I absolutely understand and respect the impulse behind banning them.

But I also know plenty of women who choose to dress a certain way -- in keeping with what they believe are the teachings of their religion -- old order Mennonites, some Apostolic and fundamentalist Pentecostals, Mormons and the Amish come to mind. I couldn't ever conceive of government trying to dictate what people can and cannot wear.

No. It's not government's place to dictate dress, for whatever grounds.

No reason to. Private places can regulate them how they like but they shouldn't just be banned.
