Tough choice between central Conn (minus Hartford) central Mass (minus Springfield) and NH. That whole corridor is perhaps the most beautiful part of this country.

Connecticut

I'd live in Fairfield county. I would need to be as close to NYC as possible.

Vermont.  I think Middlebury would be nice.  I'd love to own shop on the town square peddling antiquarian books, historic documents and militaria.  Not sure it would succeed but we could always add a taco stand...

Connecticut, but I like Vermont and Maine a lot, too.

I hope the people who answered Maine or Vermont have trust funds...

They could always become lobster fishermen or starving artists. Or massage therapists; there are a ridiculous number of massage therapists in Maine.

LOL. I have friends in Portland, a couple. One works for L.L. Bean, the other recently trained to become a massage therapist and seems to be successful. Neither was on a career track like that when they moved there, but that's life.

I live right on the border of NY and CT (live in NY and have lived in CT) and I don't like New England at all. I can't vote.

I choose rural Vermont as sort of a Vacation home or something. I would have to be closer to a city or large town most of the time.

I love that people vote politically in these things.  Basing your desires to live somewhere on politics is a surefire path to disappointment.  Don't let this parasitic obsession dominate any other part of your life, it's not healthy.

I just base mine on the pay for play scene in the state or nearby.

So in this case I did vote Rhode Island, though Massachusetts is probably not bad, and Vermont and New Hampshire are a closer drive to Montreal.
