Why is Marion County Indiana divided into nine townships?  Doesn't Indianapolis cover all of the county?

Cities and townships in the Midwest are not necessarily coterminus. When Indy was extended in 1970, a number of communities also in Marion were not incorporated. The unification did not extend to the townships either, and they maintain their status within the incorporated municipality.

Interesting.   What's with the township in central Marion?  Is that downtown Indianapolis I see in McCain colors?

Center township includes the centre of Indianapolis but rests somewhat to the south of where a perfectly central township would be, but that blue color on the map is very hard to believe. Especially as Obama also won the county 64-35.

Having located precinct maps and results, by my (somewhat errorprone) count Obama won Center Township 80.8%-18.5%. Ahem. John McCain won two precincts in the southeast, 17-004 and CO-002. 23-002 on the northern perimeter was unanimous in its support for the democratic candidate.

LOL. I was about to comment about how odd it'd be if Dude Fest was in an area that voted for McCain (though I believe one year it was in a very Republican exurb because that's the only place a venue could be reserved for cheap.)

But Center Township is 41% black, so that is unquestionably an error. The black neighborhoods of Indianapolis start in the middle of Pike township, run down diagonally and then extend the width of the townships but straddling the border until they hit Warren where the black population fades but never completely. McCain might've won the precincts in the third tier though, all are well over 90% white.

That area is basically the suburbs, and actually was prior to 1970 or whatever.

Decatur and Franklin certainly are wholly suburban in character. Note the lower populations, the road grid (well, not on this map).

Oh wow, pretty epic maps. I liked these a lot (a big draw to Atlasia for me was these maps and the level of detail).

I wonder, what made New England so Democratic on the town level? I know that the election of 1992 was the election where Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire went Democratic for good but I've always wondered why New England made that shift from being historically Republican ...
