Am I the only one who finds it odd that Nicaragua recognizes Abkhazia, South Ossetia, AND Taiwan? Do they just really like separatism or what? I know Taiwan gives them a fair amount of economic aid and favorable trade agreements; has Russia done the same in exchange for recognizing Abkhazia and South Ossetia?

In addition, Presidents Ma and Ortega have each visited each others' countries since they came to power, and Ortega has vehemently denied reports that he attempted to switched recognition to Beijing, despite the fact that he did so back when he was first in power in the 80s.

But Abkhazia and South Ossetia is just odd. Nobody else besides Russia, not even Belarus, has recognized them. Not even Cuba and Venezuela, both of which issued ambiguous statements supportive of Russia but failed to grant formal recognition.

One wonders why they haven't recognized Somaliland as an independent country.

Not sure, though I was rather disappointed in Ortega for recognizing those two evil abominations that are Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Fuck Putin and fuck those worthless "states".

Somaliland has no power.

They also haven't recognized Transnisteria, though Russia hasn't actually recognized it either.

Regarding Somaliland, I really have to wonder why NOBODY has recognized it, despite the fact that it's relatively stable and prosperous, and the consequences of recognizing it would probably be fairly minor.

No side in that matter is morally right.

Except the Chechens. They're never wrong.

The Chechens have done many wrong things. (See Beslan.) However the puppet Russian government is no better (The current President is basically a mini-Stalin.) and there's no reason for the Russians to be there anymore nor do they have anything to gain really. I mean, just look at a map. What does losing Chechnya cost Russia?

South Ossetia on the other hand doesn't even try to pretend to be a legitimate government. Freedom House gives it a 7, 6 rating. Their "elections" aren't held on any real schedule, just basically whenever they need to look good, and those are held with any serious opposition parties banned. It's an epic fail even by joke election standards. South Ossetia is ran exactly like a Russian puppet state, as opposed to a place like Northern Cyprus which can claim some level of independence and legitimacy (and actually rather fair elections).

And opens up the way for other secessionist movements in the autonomous republics of Russia with a majority non-Russian ethnic population. There also was a pipeline issue back in the day, but I gather they fixed that issue by sending the pipeline north of Chechnya.

And Russia can't afford to be defeated by what is, frankly, a bunch of ragtag mountain-based fighters. Imagine that.
