This "direct primary election" was an open primary, in which all candidates from all parties appeared on the same ballot. In this case, the Socialist candidate was unopposed within his party, and was therefore nominated for the Socialist party. Of the two Democratic candidates, Dickerson won the most votes and was nominated for the Democratic party. Of the two Republican candidates, Oddie won the most votes and was nominated for the Republican party.
