The Democratic Party is one of the two major parties in the United States, the other being the Republican Party. It currently controls the presidency and the Senate, while the Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives and a majority of governors.

The party descended from the Democratic-Republican Party of Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson was the first Presidential candidate to run (and win) as a Democrat in 1828.

It is the oldest political party in the United States. The Republicans did not appear until the 1850s, running their first presidential candidate in 1856 and winning the Presidency in 1860.
