Morris Udall, who I now wish had won the Presidency in 1976.  Honorable mentions to Ed Pastor and (gulp) Barry Goldwater for his spot-on repudiation of the religious right in the 1990's.

John McCain
I like him. He has integrity, and he isn't as partisan as most in Washington. He's an American hero.

Jsojo and I have an uncanny knack for picking the same people...

Morris Udall- partly, as J says, because he would have been better than Carter, but also because of his environmental advocacy.  It doesn't hurt that he is probably the funniest man in 20th century American politics.

"The difference between a caucus and a cactus is that a cactus has pricks on the outside."

"The people have spoken, the bastards"

"I am against vice in every form, including the vice presidency."

and, of course, my sig line.

You guys made the right choices.

Also, props to Barry Goldwater for his unequivocal support for gays in the military.
His quote on the subject is both hilarious AND spot-on.

I have always had a soft spot for Bruce Babbitt, whom I have personally met. He is one of those chosen few of really decent persons out there who also happen to be politicians. He was honest, hard working, smart, did not take himself too seriously or let his ego get out of control, calm and genuine, and had a great sense of humor.

Mo Udall. Had a great sense of humor, advocated for the environment, and his son is my senator and former representative.

Honorable mentions: John McCain, John Kyl, Barry Goldwater
