Not politically, overall, though, yes.

And all the crime and seediness and general decline?
There are nice neighborhoods, some culture, sports teams, music venues etc in Detroit. None of this exists in McDowell County. McDowell County is declining and "seedy" as well. Nothing positive would come out of living in McDowell County.

Despite the poverty, West Virginia is one of the safest states in the country. There is nothing better about Detroit.

If you can afford to live downtown by the Renaissance Center, sending your kids to private school, and season tickets to the Red Wings, Tigers, Pistons, and Lions, then Detroit is a fine place to live.

Then again, for the same price you could probably build a palace in McDowell and make all the locals your servants.

That's not difficult when criminals can't find anyone within 10 miles.  Wayne County, MI has more people in it than all of West Virginia.

Tough choice. I would pick most places over Detroit, but in this case the alternative is extremely poor, totally dependent on coal mining (no offense Al) and very remote. As someone else said, Detroit has some nice parts (Hamtamck, Gross Pointe). The rest might get bulldozed soon.

If consider 90% of the population being asswipes being safe, then your right. WV is the worst state ever. Highsest incest rate, and highest percent of snobby college fans.

McDowell is beautiful I've been there a few times. Actually useful that song is about western VA not West Virginia.
