with your hosts, Wolf Blitzer and John King

Blitzer: Good evening. I'm Wolf Blitzer.

King: And I'm John King.

Both: And this is your Election Update.

Blitzer: And there has been a rash of recent dropouts prior to the first debates. Let's listen in.

Blitzer: And, with all of those out of the way, we have an update on the polls: for the first time since 2018, Governor Stacey Abrams is out of the lead in a Democratic primary poll.

King: Yes, Senator Brown, with the endorsement from Governor Inslee, moving ever so slightly ahead of Abrams, but it'll be interesting to see how the first debate shakes that out.

Blitzer: It will, indeed. Which reminds me: tune in tomorrow night to CNN for the first Democratic Presidential Debate. The Republicans will be holding theirs on Fox News at the same time. Until then, I'm Wolf Blitzer.

King: And I'm John King.

Both: And this has been your Election Update.

First Democratic Debate
Please note: any June schedules posted today after this post will not be viewed as late.

Blitzer: Good evening. I'm Wolf Blitzer.

King: And I'm John King, and we're here at Iowa State University in Ames, not to bring you an Election Update, but to moderate the first Democratic Presidential Debate!

*crowd cheers*

Blitzer: That's right, John. We're here with...

...Sound Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg...

...Former Representative from Texas's 16th District Beto O'Rourke...

...Former Senator from Massachusetts and 2004 nominee John Kerry...

...Florida Governor Alex Sink...

...Georgia Governor Stacey Abrams...

...and, finally, Senator from Ohio Sherrod Brown.

King: Now, the candidates have all been briefed on the format of the debate and their responses, but, to our viewers at home, here's how it's going to work. Candidates will give an opening statement, answer one specific question, and give a closing statement. Responses and statements will be judged on clarity, length, and, of course, votes from the audience and you, the viewers across the nation.

Blitzer: Indeed. Let's get started.

Specific Questions

To Mayor Buttigieg: While many have poked fun at your generally less than awe-inspiring polling averages, it should be noted that, if most other mayors of cities the size of South Bend had run, they'd have been completely overrun. What do you think makes you stand out from that crowd?

To Rep. O'Rourke: When you entered this race, you were generally polling above 10%; now your campaign seems to be struggling significantly. What do you intend to do to reverse this trend?

To Senator Kerry: Many still recall your narrow defeat by President Bush in 2004; aside from your ideological changes, what are you doing differently this time to prevent a déjà vu experience?

To Governor Sink: You've been criticized recently for airing attack ads against Senator Kerry. Do you still believe that it was wise to launch them, and will you continue to do so in the future?

To Governor Abrams: Over the past few years, your ideology has been incorporated more and more into the Democratic mainstream, and you've been endorsed by both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Do you believe that this makes you a part of the Democratic establishment, and, if so, could you tell our viewers why you don't think that's a bad thing, as many have begun trumpeting over the years?

To Senator Brown: You've only recently taken the lead over Governor Abrams, largely because you've inspired several other progressive candidates to drop out and endorse you. What do you think makes you stand out from the other progressives in their eyes?

First Republican Debate
Please note: any June schedules posted today after this post will not be viewed as late.

Carlson: Good evening. I'm Tucker Carlson.

Kelly: And I'm Megyn Kelly, and we're here at the University of South Carolina in Columbia to bring you the first Republican President Debate!

*crowd cheers*

Carlson: That's right, Megyn. We're here with...

...Former Georgia State Representative Alveda King...

...Conservative Commentator Ben Shapiro...

...Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley...

...Vice President Paul Ryan...

...Senator from Ohio Rob Portman...

...Former Secretary of Commerce and Senator from Pennsylvania Rick Santorum...

...Vermont Governor Phil Scott...

...Representative from Michigan's 3rd District Justin Amash...

...and Senator from Alaska Lisa Murkowski.

Kelly: Now, the candidates have all been briefed on the format of the debate and their responses, but, to our viewers at home, here's how it's going to work. Candidates will give an opening statement, answer one specific question, and give a closing statement. Responses and statements will be judged on clarity, length, and, of course, votes from the audience and you, the viewers across the nation.

Carlson: Indeed. Let's get started.

Specific Questions

To State Rep. King: You were one of the first candidates to declare, and yet you've struggled to get above 5% in the polls. Do you believe there's any outside reason for this?

To Mr. Shapiro: Two of the four candidates currently polling above ten percent currently identify as at least partly pro-choice. What is your opinion on what this says about the Republican Party?

To Governor Haley: As an icon to many conservatives, you've shown minorities and Republicans need not be mutually exclusive. Do you have a plan to finally end the Democratic advantage in securing nonwhite votes?

To Vice President Ryan: As President Romney's seeming handpicked successor, to what do you attribute your struggles in the polls of late?

To Senator Portman: Many have noted that you could well face your fellow Ohio Senator, Sherrod Brown, in the general election if you win the primaries. Do you think this would affect your campaign style at all?

To Secretary Santorum: As Commerce Secretary, many see you as having a hand in the somewhat volatile current state of the economy. How do you respond to this?

To Governor Scott: Many describe you as "too liberal" to be the Republican nominee. How do you intend to make sure conservatives don't stay home next November, or go over to other candidates, such as the Libertarian or Constitution Party nominees, or independent Rob Manfred?

To Representative Amash: The last sitting Representative to become President was James A. Garfield in 1880; how do you intend to win against an opponent who, if the Democratic frontrunners hold, will be viewed as having significantly greater experience than you?

To Senator Murkowski: This question's mostly just to calm some nerves, but it's still relevant to ask. In 2010, you ran as an independent following your defeat in the Republican Senate primary in Alaska. If you lose this primary, what are your intentions for the general election? Also, speaking of independents, what are your thoughts on Rob Manfred's candidacy?

RICK SANTORUM'S DEBATE RESPONSE
Opening Statement:

Thank you, Tucker and Megyn for moderating the debate, thank you to the University of South Carolina for allowing us to use their facilities tonight, and thank you to everyone for being here or tuning in from across this great land. It’s great to see so many people concerned about our politics and getting involved, because we need strong people who care to lead us forward. And that is what my campaign is about. Making sure we have strong leadership over the next few years to ensure that America goes in the right direction, makes the right choices, and creates a society where everyone has the ability to pursue the American Dream, and where Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness is available to everyone.

Answer to Debate Question:

Well, as Secretary of Commerce, I have always strived to foster an environment in this country where jobs were opening and readily available, and where businesses could start and grow without having to worry about big government breathing down their backs all of the time. I consulted many business leaders and owners, I met with the employees, I heard many different reports from advisors and experts on the economy and business, I would put everything together into a report, and I would take my findings to the President. From there, he would make the decisions as to what we should do and where we should go. In this administration, we created thousands of jobs, we brought in revenue, and we pushed for tax decreases on businesses and workers. Were there some bad choices? Were there moments when we should have done one thing and we did the other? Of course there were, no one is perfect. But ultimately, those decisions were up to the President and his advisors, so to put the blame solely at my feet is somewhat irresponsible.

Closing Statement:

Tonight you heard us all give our pitch to you, the voters. You heard our stances on different policy, subjects, and accusations. And ultimately, it is up to you to decide which of us is worthy of being the party's nominee, and possibly even President of the United States. But it is important to choose someone who has the experience and the qualities needed to run this nation. I have over 30 years’ experience as an attorney, congressman, senator, consultant, and secretary. I have a passion for American ideals and institutions, and I believe everyone in this country deserves a fair shot at stepping up the ladder. We need a country where taxes are low, jobs are available, rights are preserved, neighborhoods are safe, and where everyone, born and unborn, is seen as equal under the law. This is my vision for America, and I hope you join me in seeing that vision through. Thank you, good night, and God Bless.

Thank you, Wolf. I think there's a fundamental choice in this election as to what direction we take. For the past 40 years, we've seen the shrinking of the middle class, their wages, their right to bargain collectively, and overall economic mobility, all the while, we've seen a rise in endless wars, income inequality, Wall Street greed, and Washington corruption. But it doesn't have to be this way. When work has dignity, everyone can afford healthcare, education and housing. They have power over their schedules and the economic security to start a family, pay for daycare and college, take time off to care for themselves or their families when they are sick, and save for retirement. When work has dignity, people come before corporate profits and Wall Street greed. When work has dignity, our country has a strong middle class.

I'm here tonight on this stage to speak a message on behalf of the middle class. Do we continue the 40-year decline of our middle class, or do we fight for a economic agenda that creates jobs, raises wages, protects the environment and fights for our middle class? Are we prepared to take on the enormous economic and political power of big donors, or do we continue to slide into political oligarchy with dark and soft money controlling our democracy? These are the most important questions of our time, and how we answer them will determine the future of our country.

I think this campaign has gained some considerable momentum. That's because our message is not geared towards appealing towards one separate voter bloc: Instead, it's about when you love this country, you fight for the people who make it work. Too many pundits today believe you're either campaigning to progressives or you're campaigning to workers. But this campaign has done both; you have to do both. I believe that's one thing our campaign really stands out on.

Our message celebrates the dignity of work, all work. When we fight for workers, we fight for all people, whether they punch a clock or swipe a badge, earn a salary or make tips. Whether they are raising children or caring for an aging parent. And as we celebrate the dignity of work, we unify. We do not divide.

I don't believe that's a polarizing message. As my campaign in Ohio just a year ago showed, progressives can win - and win decisively - in the heartland, in a state where President Romney won twice. We showed that we do it without compromising on women’s rights or civil rights or LGBTQ rights. We do it without caving to Wall Street or the drug companies or the gun lobby. Our message represents a progressive message that can win anywhere.

My dad was a doctor from Mansfield. We didn't grow up with much wealth, we weren't fortunate enough to have that. I think it would have been beyond his wildest dreams to see his son up here on this stage today running for president.

I love this country and my dad loved this country, and he was the most proud American because of what it gave him in terms of raising his family, even though we never had much money. But today in America, we are the only major country on earth that doesn't guarantee health care to all people, that doesn't guarantee paid family and medical leave. We have the highest rate of childhood poverty of almost any major country on earth. We are seeing millions of families unable to send their kids to college in the United States of America.

I'm running for president because I believe progress doesn’t happen on its own. It happened because your parents and your grandparents stood up and demanded their government work for them. It was citizens and workers. In union halls and church basements, it was civil rights activists and child advocates who took on powerful special interests and changed this country for the better. When we see a White House that looks like a retreat for Wall Street executives, we know that our fight is far from over. We have so much left to do to raise wages, lower healthcare costs and make sure everyone who works hard can retire with the dignity that they have earned.

Election Update 2020
with your hosts, Wolf Blitzer and John King

Blitzer: Good evening. I'm Wolf Blitzer.

King: And I'm John King.

Both: And this is your Election Update.

Blitzer: Well, while we do have a few people who have scheduled endorsement announcements later this month, there's not much news to be had. The jury is still out on the results of the first debates, and recent polls show an intense heat heading into July.

King: Indeed they do, Wolf. But, before you go, we do have something you will find intriguing: the primary schedules for 2020.

Blitzer: We do, John. In a surprising move, both parties have aligned their primaries to line up exactly with each other. The schedule is as followed:

Feb. 3: IA
Feb. 11: NH
Feb. 22: NV
Feb. 26: ND
Feb. 29: SC
March 3: AL, CA, MA, NC, OK, TN, TX, VT, VA, AK, WY
March 7: KS, ME, LA, VI
March 10: HI, MI, ID, MS, MO, OH
March 17: GA, NMI, AZ, FL, IL, GU
March 24: AR, CO, NM, UT, NE, SD
April 2: MN, PR, MT, OR, KY
April 10: RI, CT, NY, DE, MD, PA
April 15: WA, AS
April 23: WI, WV, NJ, IN
May 1: DC

Also, both parties have decided where they will be holding their conventions: the Republicans will be holding theirs in the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, while the Democrats have selected Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The DNC will be held from July 13-16 of next year, while the RNC will be held from August 24-27.

King: Indeed. Meanwhile, in other news, the Senate confirmed Rick Santorum's replacement as Commerce Secretary, Greg Mankiw, today. The margin was 65-34, with Senator Sherrod Brown abstaining due to scheduling conflicts with his ongoing campaign for President. This was not met with much pushback, as the confirmation vote was not expected to be close.

Blitzer: And that will be all for tonight. Until next time, I'm Wolf Blitzer.

King: And I'm John King.

Both: And this has been your Election Update.
