The sponsor has 24 hours to commence advocacy for this bill.

I thank Peebs for sponsoring this in the House. This bill simply seeks to approve Montenegro's membership of NATO. To date only Spain and ourselves are yet to ratify their membership.

Following their independence from Serbia in 2006, Montenegro have made great strides in aligning themselves with the west, like in many former-Yugoslav countries. Ratification of their application to join NATO would help complete their alignment with the west and would help defend their territory.

Additionally, NATO membership for the country would go a great distance to healing the scars of the 1999 NATO bombing of the territory, which is still fresh in the memory of many Montenegrins and would confirm to the world that Montenegro has moved away from its dark past when it was part of Milosevic's Yugoslavia.

Only a vote in support of this bill can be seen as a vote for peace in Europe, so I call on Congress to support the ratification of Montenegro's NATO membership.

As a side note, the real life US Congress has just ratified their membership in real life.

Doesn't their membership have to be ratified by NATO?

It has to be ratified by all of the legislatures of NATO members.

I think this is a positive step, and I will vote to ratify membership.

There seems to be support for it - at least from those who have taken part in the debate on it. Although Peebs, as sponsor, hasn't made a comment yet, I think the House should proceed with this as it was proposed by me and I've advocated the bill.

I request that the House ends the debate on this bill in order to hold a vote on it.

Some background, I sent a PM about a week ago now (five days ago actually), requesting members at least make some kind of statement on bills and avoid missing votes, because we had something of a come to jesus moment once OneJ and Peebs started to miss votes as well.

I am mildly disappointed that a bill sponsor couldn't even make the simplest of posts in FOUR Days time, when technically the second post in every thread, is a post by me threatening tabling motions if sponsors don't post in 24 hours from introduction. This is a practice I reintroduced from the old Senate that was rather effective.

I am hesitant to enforce here, because Peebs sponsored this for you and it wouldn't fair to you if your bill got tabled because of her laziness. Still, it is rather irritating.

We sometimes have in this house the remarkable situation that members express their opposition to pieces of legislations which have been open for several days just before the house, which sees the silence as quiet consent, plans to motion for a final vote. I won't take the silence on this bill as a general approval, since this is a controversial issue. I motion for a final vote on this. Representatives had their chance to have a say on this.

Jesus.
For the record, I assumed sponsorship because I have nothing against the bill (and, as Adam Clyde said, we should ratify Montenegro's NATO membership) and I believe that most, if not all, legislation deserves to be heard in the House.
Also, I third the motion for a final vote.

This has just 24 hours left.

I would call 24 hours on vote changes, but it is pointless since that is all that remains anyways. Tongue
