This idea makes sense, since Gingrich has a chance of winning a two man race against Santorum, while Romney does not.

As one of the more 'conservative' candidates, Gingrich could overtake Santorum, Romney is obviously incapable of doing so since he can barely beat them splitting the conservative vote. I'm not saying it makes sense for Romney to drop out, but only Gingrich would actually have a chance of beating Santorum head to head.
