Anyone giving credence to the idea that Alan Grayson will primary Nelson?

Bill Nelson should join Kent Conrad, Joe Lieberman, and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Alan Grayson should win the 2012 Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. With President Obama re-elected, carrying Florida (which has sided with the winner in 19 of the last 21 elections and is now a bellwether) … yeah, Grayson, is plenty electable.

Hi! I'm reality, nice to meet you- no he's not.

2012 would be the right time for Alan Grayson to run. (Bill Nelson should retire.)

That would be hilarious as Grayson would get totally destroyed.

Why?

Because he is too liberal for the state and not only that he is hackishly partisan at being a liberal. Florida has a slight Republican lean and a seemlingly built in Republican advantage on top of that. And thats before accounting for all the gerrymandering. You also have a very strong and efficient state party machine and a deep talent pool of candidates. Grayson didn't even get 40% in a district that is R+2 and voted for Obama 52-47. Its not like he lost by 10 or something like what happened in VA-05 where a liberal Dem managed to controll the bleeding. And Grayson only won in the first place because Ric Keller was a corrupt sleezeball.

Florida has never elected liberals?

I don't recall Bob Graham, Lawton Chiles, or Bill Nelson being far left hacks like Grayson.

Florida could elect a liberal, but not one like Grayson.

And before you start jumping up and down about Obama, remember, did he run as a Chicago leftwing partisan or a centrist who was going to usher in a new age of politics?

Besides, why would Grayson run for the Senate when he will likely get a new House seat specially made to order for him in Orlando?

The man just lost by one of the biggest margins in 2010 in a district he'd have to win to carry the state.  Face it, he's toxic goods.  Obama could win 60% in the State and Grayson would still probably lose.

Not a convincing argument. 2010 was a different kind of election. And, don't forget this: When Grayson unseated Ric Keller (after four terms), he won a district that hadn't voted for a Democrat in about 25 years.

So? As SNCY pointed out, he lost by a bigger margin than almost all other incumbents, especially for a swing district. And 25 years is nothing as far as single party tenures go (see the 100+ year tenures of a lot of Southern Democratic districts for instance, and the 150+ year Republican tenure of NY-23)

That seat has changed considerably over that time. Its only R+2 and Obama won it by 52-47.

You know Florida had six seats (6 or 7), in the 1950's when the GOP picked up its first seat since reconstruction. In 1970, C. W. "Bill" Young was elected to that same seat. Most beleive that when Young retires the GOP will lose the seat. How long a Republican has represented a seat means nothing. What matters is current demographics and boundaries.

And Keller only won by 7 in 2006.

Doesn't it ultimately depend on who leads the ticket on the Republican side? Could this Senate President carry the state if say Sarah Palin is elected, over an Obama/Nelson or Obama/Grayson ticket? Just throwing that out there.

I wouldn't say the Florida Democratic Party is dead. I heart Debbie Wasserman Schultz! Smiley

Yeah, the top ticket will effect the race.
But I think a strong republican candidate could win even if Obama carries the state.

A rich trust fund baby with a pretty starlet girlfriend. Sounds like the ultimate Florida GOP candidate.
