If you know the right codes, you can do lots of cool things:

It's not really practical, you have to copy each time the character you want, it has at least the merit to exist.

Nah, you can do most of them by holding down the Atl key and pressing in a 4 digit combo on the numberpad or if you use funky keys all the time you can remap your keyboard.  It's still a bit cumbersome, but you can only squeeze so many keys onto a keyboard.

I actually changed my keyboard layout to US-International, because I type a lot of foreign names. It allows you to do this:

` + a = à
' + e = é
^ + i = î
~ + o = õ
" + u = ü
