Well it's a worldwide name for Dems. As you know the Whigs were the secular party in England, similarly to the Whig party in US. It switched to the Labor party in the US.  It's more of an international name for Dems, used by England than anything else. Which uses Labor and Tories or Whigs and Conservatives, instead of Democrats and Republicans.
