If we had been granted MPs or some other form of representation to petition the government, I would've been anti-independence. The lack of representation would've been the key thing with me. I probably would've been quite happy to stay if we were given a few MPs.

If there was self government, even with a monarch, I probably would have opposed independence.  It was not offered until ti was too late.

One of the most unfortunate things about the revolutionary war was it helped quell the fact that people wanted change in terms of class antagonisms, in favor of nationalism.  A nationalism that, for some time after, benefit only wealthy white men (i.e. the "1%" of that time).  It slowed any meaningful progress on that matter, and had there been no revolution - America would likely still exist as a nation today, with its birth resembling that of Canada.

Who then was focused on either class antagonism or nationalism?

I support the independence of every colony, as a matter of principle.

This is the conflict of a few slothen landowners who do not want to pay taxes for our own self defence! We pay lower taxes than anywhere else in the empire, have our own Provincial Assemblies with elected members- which is far more than people back in the Isles can claim. There is no difference between us and the people in Great Britain, we re the same. There is no ground, whatsoever, for a war of independence. None.

I have been opposed to our independence since I was six years old.
