The race really had a "2004-in-reverse" feel to me all the way through.
To me, it seemed eerily similar to the 2006 governor's race in my home state of Michigan.
Yeah Obama painted Romney as a wealthy out of touch businessman just like Granholm's campaign painted Dick DeVFos as an out of touch wealthy businessman in 06'. I read an article on the net in comparing the 2006 Michigan Governors Race to the 2012 Presidential Race.

Rick Snyder(the current Michigan Governor) defined himself as a nerd on his first ad in the 2010 Republican Primary for Governor. Snyder defined himself early but Romney let the Obama Campaign define him in attack ads in swing states as a corporate raider. This hurt Romney in the Upper Midwest Region on election day.
