Freedom Involvement.

Its obvious had the Communists won that election Soviet troops would be in Italy within a year and no more elections. See Czechslovakia.

Unlike the coups against democratic governments this was the preservation of a democracy instead of a totalitarian regime. And attacking it is a bit hypocritical if one doesn't note this was literally "BOTH SIDES DO IT", the Soviets gave just as much aid to the Communists if not more

Probably the best thing the CIA did in the Cold War.

“U.S. involvement” in any foreign context post-1945 rarely turns out well.
True, although in this case it did (at least better than the alternative.)

The CIA helped the good guys but I doubt the commies had any real chance of winning even without it.

Probably also true, but can't blame them for not taking any chances. Remember that this is before polling was widespread and probably wasn't even a thing in Italy and they lacked all the other things we use today to track elections. It was the same year as Dewey Defeats Truman after all.

Sorry I meant in the aftermath, the years of lead as it was called in the 1970s.

This question is about 1948 though.

Which could've been handled better obviously. But the product of a communist victory would've been a GDR style totalitarian regime.

Yeah the USSR would have invaded Italy in 1948. Delusional.

It wouldn't be an invasion so much as a welcoming.
