He most likely would have waited for 1976, but:



President Richard Nixon (R-CA) / Vice President Spiro Agnew (R-MD) ✓
Senator Robert Kennedy (D-NY) / Senator Stuart Symington (D-MO)

The New Deal Coalition wasn't coming back, but the Kennedy ticket would be more stable and moderate-appealing than McGovern's.
