My very tentative impression is that, while it'd be much better to have a more progressive governor, it's tough to complain as a resident of a deep red state/things could be a lot worse vis a vis education, taxation, infrastructure, etc.  I'd like to be more informed, though.

Please share your rationale as well as your vote.

From my visits there, Tennessee has struck me as a very well-run state with a decidedly non-populist, business-minded Republican Party infrastructure for how socially conservative the state is.  I'm a fan.  He also seems to be relatively moderate and doing a fine job for his state.  Most of the problems the state has have been around for a lot longer than Republicans had control of anything, after all.

Huge FF.  He's a nice, sensible leader and is probably the best governor in the South IMO.

HP because of some of his economic views, but overall not that bad for a Governor of Tennessee AFAIK.

Didn't he sign that anti-gay therapist bill?

Yeah, because signing one bill that the legislature passes makes you a HP.

He also killed the anti-transgender bill that was being pushed FWIW.

I'm not entirely sure about Haslam since his record on LGBT right is somewhat mixed (though the therapist bill is pretty horrendous), but what if he signed even a single piece of legislation that overtly discriminated against blacks?  Wouldn't he be an automatic HP in that case?

If it abolished affirmative action or said you can refuse to hire anyone for reason of identity/ethnicity, he would not be an automatic HP. I don't quite get what you mean, and I have no idea what a gay therapist bill is.

I wouldn't vote for him because of his party, but on his own merits he seems relatively not horrible.

Wow, wait, are we talking about gay conversion therapy? WTF, I didn't know he supported that.

A very good governor for the most part, but I would like to get someone more conservative in 2018.

After reading his statements on the bill he signed, maybe he isn't necessarily an HP.  Apparently he insisted that those who are in imminent danger to themselves or others get treatment and that those refused treatment receive a referral for another counselor or therapist.

Still an bad bill, but it may not automatically make Haslam an HP.

No, it's saying that therapists and the like can refuse treatment for LGBT people for religious reasons.

Maybe the best governor in the US, neck and neck with Brian Sandoval and Charlie Baker. Should have been EdSec instead of DeVos.
