Option 1, and having Shlesinger in the race would actually be the best option for the GOP.  No republican is going to win this race period.  With Schlesinger being as brutal as he is, Lieberman picks up a big chunk of the GOP vote that puts him over the top.  A stronger GOP canddiate won't get enough to win, but will take enough of the GOP vote away from Lieberman that gives the seat to Lamont
