This is politics made visceral, stripped off any superficial ideological content. This is about which of two individuals gets to be forced into retirement now and which is going to vote for the exact same policy positions the other is going to vote for, and enjoy all the financial and career influence perks of office, for until he chooses to retire.
And the top two insanity creates a nice super long drawn out campaign - a "normal" primary, and the fight would have been over once the ballots were counted. Now it just went into a second round, to be decided many months later.
