Hello everyone,

I apologize for the delay -- this week has been hectic on my end and I'm not sure I'll be able to continue my role as moderator. I am currently putting out feelers to people who might be interested in taking over. If someone is interested, please PM me.

Again I apologize for the delay and will remedy a solution so the game can continue.

All my best,
NHI

I will take over. I have the time and the ability of moderating a game. I will do it with great pleasure.

Hello everyone!

So this is official, NHI has agreed to transfer the responsibility of the moderation of this competitive game to me. I read the rules of the game so I guess we can start the next round now.

As we turn August, President Rubio enjoyed a rise in his job approval ratings by passing from 44 % to 50 %. This is mostly due to the successful military operation that killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Al Bukamal, Syria. And thanks to his efforts such as an executive order allowing the Congress to audit the Federal Reserve and the abolition of the sales tax on manufacturing equipment, the U.S. economy recovers.

On the Republican side, President Rubio increased his lead due, notably to his recent presidential accomplishments and to his attacks questionning Greg Abbott's conservative credentials. Justin Amash and David Duke remained steady in their poll standing.

On the Democratic side, the race seems to be definitely wide open since Sherrod Brown's front-runner status got more fragile due, notably, to his less frequent presence on the campaign trail last week and to Tim Kaine's attacks on his progressive credentials and on his electability since Brown was the running mate of a losing presidential candidate. The Virginia Senator enjoyed a considerable boost in the polls, the moreover that he got the endorsement of former rival John Bel Edwards. The race for the Democratic nomination seems to be announced as a 5-way race between Brown, Baldwin, Harris, Kaine and Gabbard unless the 2 under-dogs (Jason Kander and Dennis Kucinich) manage to soar by the beginning of the primary season.

Breaking News, Part 1

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi killed in Abu Kamal

In the night of July 25 2019, the U.S. Armed Forces launched a military offensive against a secret mansion where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was hiding. During the offensive, 19 ISIS jihadists, including Baghdadi, were killed while 2 U.S. soldiers were wounded. A few hours later, President Rubio addressed the nation from the White House about this successful offensive, describing Baghdadi's death as a « major victory against terrorism. »

The Alaska-Texas is approved in the Senate

Despite the fillibuster imposed by the Senate Democrats, the Republicans managed to get the 3/5 vote to pass the fillibuster partly due to the abscence of Tim Kaine and Kamala Harris on the Senate floor on August 1 and also since 8 Democratic senators, mostly from red states, especially Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Jon Tester (MT), Joe Manchin (WV), Claire McCaskill (MO), Joe Donnelly (IN), Mark Warner (VA), Bob Casey Jr. (PA) and Michael Bennett (CO), supported the construction of the Alaska-Texas pipeline just like they supported the Keystone XL pipeline in 2015. As a result, it gives 58 YEA votes against 40 NAY votes. Later, the bill is signed into law by President Rubio.

Yes, didn't NHI send the endorsements to you?

No he didn't. He just sent a message telling me not to forget about making endorsement lists and questions for the debates (Dems, and Reps).

Breaking News, Part 2

Increase of the tensions between Washington and Moscow

The U.S. military operation that killed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Syria has also brought, as a result, an increase of the diplomatic tensions between the United States and Russia since Syria is one of Russia's greatest allies. In fact, Vladimir Putin worries about the potential that his ally Bachar el-Assad would be toppled, which would deprive Russia of its economic and strategic interests in the Middle East.

With Abbott's withdrawal, President Rubio's path to his party's nomination has been reinforced even though he doesn't take anything for granted, which is why he still gives efforts throughout the early states. The entrance of Ben Shapiro in the Republican race seems to be attracting attention.

On the Democratic side, the recent withdrawals of Jason Kander and Dennis Kucinich from the race made it easier for one of the remaining candidates (Sherrod Brown, Tim Kaine, Tulsi Gabbard, Kamala Harris and Tammy Baldwin) to have a chance to clinch their party's nomination before their national convention that will be held from July 27-30 2020.

Breaking News

Putin orders withdrawal of Russian troops in visit to Syrian base
After Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's death, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria during a visit to the war-torn country on Monday, declaring victory against ISIS. As a result, any risk of nuclear war against the United States is prevented.

OOC: Should something like Net Neutrality be included in the next news update? It might make sense, considering it might be able to knock the popular Rubio down a few pegs and make the game more fun

As you saw in the most recent news, I said that the Democrats are now less likely to have a brokered convention and to be divided for so long, which gives them a fair chance for this election. But if this is about making it fair for you, I will make more research for it.

Just for your information, according to the Green Papers website, there will be 2522 Republican delegates so a Republican candidate will need to win at least 1262 delegates to clinch his party's nomination.

https://www.thegreenpapers.com/P20/R-Alloc.phtml

On the Democratic side, there will be 4483 Democratic delegates so a Democratic candidate will need to win at least 2242 delegates to clinch his party's nomination.

Breaking News

The Congress approves the Path to Victory and Peace Act

On August 19, the Senate unanimously approves the Path to Victory and Peace Act proposed by President Rubio. The House did the same on August 26. This bill is signed into law by President Rubio, thus reducing the U.S. aid to Pakistan from 800 million dollars a year to 100 million dollars in economic and military aid and sales of military equipment due to Pakistan's sponsoring of terrorist groups in the region and also due to Pakistan's decision to arrest Shakil Afridi who made a great contribution in assisting U.S. efforts to find and kill Bin Laden. As a result, India accepted to deploy 80 000 Indian ground troops in Afghanistan in order to fight radical Islamic terrorism there, including ISIS, Al Qaida and the Taliban. President Rubio described the adoption of this law as a « great step for victory against terrorism as well as for peace, stability and freedom in Afghanistan since the combination of the military strengths of the world's first military power (the United States) and of the 4th one (India) will surely give the upper hand to the NATO allies and drastically accelerate radical Islamic terrorism's total defeat in Afghanistan and in the neighboring regions without needing to send additional troops in Afghanistan.

Increase of violence in Israel

Due to the United States' decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, riots between Israeli and Palestinian citizens triggered in Jerusalem and killed 15 people and wounded 20 others.

Shapiro attacks Rubio on net neutrality
Ben Shapiro slammed President Rubio for his opposition to net neutrality. But the President fired back by declaring that net neutrality only brings regulations that allow the government to hinder accessibility and the diversity of content, thus diminishing innovation and free market.

First Democratic Presidential Debate

Tammy Baldwin's debate answers

I have been a fighter for the progressive cause since my earliest days in the Wisconsin Assembly. While there, I opposed don't ask, don't tell And introduced legislation legalizing same sex marriage in Wisconsin. In Congress, I was one of the people who voted against the Iraq War, and as a Senator, I have led the way on LGBT issues and have supported a single-payer system.

I swear to you, I will fight for you in the White House, not the handful at the top. We are a nation that is run by our working and middle classes, and they have been neglected for far too long!

Well for starters, we should look to make sure that our primaries are not being controlled by the DNC, because there is little doubt in my mind that the 2016 or primary was rigged.

However, the reforms made since have improved our system. Superdelegates are now restricted in what they can and can't do, we have far more debates, and the entire system has been overhauled in general. We call ourselves the Democratic Party, so let's live up to it this time around.

Well, my top donors have consistently been EMILY's List and the University of Wisconsin, and I don't believe that they're PACs. Furthermore, I was the first candidate in the race to forbid the obscenely wealthy from donating to me or the PACs supporting me.

The PACs that do support me do so through sourcing their donations for  grassroots communities. There is little wrong with PACs who do that. That said, I will endeavour to tougher our campaign finance laws. Indeed, that is one of me main policy planks.

I support a two-state solution. Both countries have a right to exist, but first, they need to end this vendetta against each other. All it is doing is harming civilians, and that does no one any favours.

Jerusalem, to propose a new solution, should be an autonomous city, which sends representatives to both the Israeli and Palestinian governments.

Absolutely not. What the President has needlessly done is strain our relationship with Pakistan to the breaking point, considering that they are not know for their healthy relationshipwith India. Both of these countries have nuclear weapons as well, and this decision has needlessly destabilized the region and is pushing us closer to an actual nuclear war.

It was a stupid decision, and we cannot allow anymore shortsighted policies when it comes to this sort of thing

Tonight, I have made my case to you, the people of the United States of America. The middle and working classes have been ignored for too damn long, and we cannot let it continue. I am running for the American people, so I ask you to stand with me, and together, we will restore America!

First Democratic Presidential Debate

Kamala Harris' debate answers

I have seen first hand in Washington how bad the big money influence is.It disgusts me that a lobbyist can walk into a senators office and have a provision passed a day later. This problem is the root of all the other problems in our political system, and therefore we must take out big money influences for the greater good.

First Democratic Presidential Debate

Tim Kaine's debate answers

-Opening statements

Good evening. The question tonight is who has the best experience to lead this country. I proudly served as Governor of Virginia for 4 years and I'm serving in the U.S. Senate for 7 years. I have the right experience and I know what it takes to make our society fair for the middle class and for other classes.

-To all the candidates. In the last election, the Democratic party has suffered it's worst electoral defeat since 1984. What should be the lessons that should be taken from the 2016 election?

One of the reasons why we lost the 2016 election is because our base lost its trust towards our system and was suspicious about the possibility that the process to select the Democratic nominee was rigged.

We also need to nominate a real progressive in order to bring our base together. As president of the United States, I will fight to rise the minimum wage at 15 $/hour, to restore Glass Steagall, to put aside fossil energies and promote green energies in order to improve our ecological footprint and to make sure that rich people will pay their fair share.

-To all the candidates. What will be your policy towards Israel if you're elected president?

While I believe that Jerusalem is Israel's capital, I also believe in a two-state solution in order to ensure peace in the Middle East. Unlike the President, I am interested in restoring peace in this region.

-To all the candidates. As we know, most of you, except for Senator Kaine, missed the Congressional vote on the Path to Victory and Peace Act that reduced the U.S. aid to Pakistan due to suspicions of Pakistani sponsoring to terrorism in order to convince India to deploy ground troops there in order to fight terrorism, which, as President Rubio stated, I quote, « will give us the advantage against terrorists thanks to the combination of the strengths of the 1st and 4th military powers in the world without needing to send additional troops there. » I want to hear from all of you, did the President take the right decision on Afghanistan?

While I have disagreements with President Rubio on foreign policy, I think he made the right choice. We are fighting our longest war since the Vietnam War. I believe we can effectively defeat terrorism in Afghanistan without needing to send aditionnal troops there. As a result, we will save hundreds of billions of dolllars and unlike Pakistan, a country that is suspected to sponsor terrorist groups, India is an ally that can be fully trusted. Thanks to the combination of our military powers, we're going to ensure victory in Afghanistan, which will remove the terrorist threat there. So if I'm president, not only we will be able to defeat terrorism there but we'll also be able to withdraw our troops from Afghanistan during my first term. That's how we're going to lead our nation to peace.

-Senator Kaine, during your time as Virginia Governor, unemployment in Virginia remained lower than the national average during the 2008 financial crisis. Do you believe it could be a factor explaining why you are the most qualified on this stage to handle economic issues?

Of course it is. And you're right, Virginia's unemployment rate was under the national average during my tenure as Governor of Virginia. The unemployment rate in Virginia rose from 3.2% to 7.4%, a smaller increase than the national unemployment rate which rose from 4.7% to 9.9% during the same period. You know how we did better? By investing in the development of infrastructures in Virginia, which facilitated economic activities. As a result, Virginia took first place each year from 2006 to 2009 in the "Best States For Business" rankings published by Forbes magazine. And during my time in the Senate, I've been in the Committee on the Budget so I know what it takes to manage the economy and to make it fair for all Americans of all classes.

-Closing statements

My friends, I want to thank you for watching. Time has come to head into a bright future. I'm running to fight for you, not for corporations and big banks but for the American people. I want the voices of all Americans, including the middle class and lower income Americans to be heard because I want to be president for all Americans. That's why I'm asking for your vote.

While the tendency in the Republican primary race remains stable, the tendency in the Democratic primary race drastically changed after Sherrod Brown's withdrawal from the race. Tim Kaine and Kamala Harris are the favorites of Democratic moderate voters and among the establishment while Tammy Baldwin and Tulsi Gabbard are clearly the darlings of the anti-establishment and more progressive voters.

Justice Anthony Kennedy considers retirement due to health problems

Yesterday, rumors indicated that 83-year old Justice Anthony Kennedy is considering retirement due to health problems, including Melanoma. As a result, the left as well as independents worry about the eventuality of the nomination of a conservative Justice by President Rubio, which would bring further restrictions in abortion and same-sex marriage as well as a stronger access to guns.

Justin Amash's Debate Answers

Opening statements

Amash: First, I want to thank Mr. Shapiro and Mr. Rubio for coming here today, our country currently has a choice to make, the last four years had advancements but also had many, many problems, since the civil war, our government has always got bigger and this hasn't been different in this government, our tax code could be much more simple and better, and much more, so there's a choice to make and I hope you do the best one in your view.

Congressman Amash, what would an Amash Doctrine look like?

Amash: An Amash Doctrine would seek to stop our focus on controlling other countries affairs and instead would bring this focus to fixing our own problems! Rubio's and Shapiro's weak foreign policy both have proved to have failed, there are numerous problems with their foreign policy, and also examples of it failing, just look to Iraq and Libya! The problem with their foreign policy is that by intervening in other countries, we interfere with many people's lives, if their lives get worse, something normal after an invasion and government change, they associate their life getting worse and our invasion, so they begin to hate us and in the end, unite to become a terrorist group! Under the Amash Doctrine this wouldn't happen, because we wouldn't send our sons and daughters to fight, we would bring back the ones fighting and we wouldn't intervene in issues like Ukraine that don't show any threat to the USA, because we wouldn't be intervening on people's lives, they wouldn't associate bad things with us and the hatred would get lower and lower, and this way terrorism would get lower, the Amash Doctrine would look like what our founding fathers advised, a non interventionist foreign policy, where we only use the military for defense and try to have better relations with all countries.

Congressman Amash, on the campaign trail you accused President Rubio of failing on his promises? How do you base your statements?

Amash: Look, Mr. Rubio has failed in many ways, let's start with the IRS repeal, something I want to do if I'm elected, one of Rubio's main campaign points was to repeal the IRS and he made many speeches promising this, on October 29 during a speech in Warren, Michigan he said "We're going to balance the budget, abolish the IRS and replace it", two things he failed to do, and this isn't the only speech he promised this, he also promised in other speeches like one in Wisconsin in October 21 where he said the exact same thing about abolishing the IRS and balancing the budget, it actually isn't hard to find speeches where he promises this if you look in the internet, and despite failing to abolish the IRS he still claimed he did in he's announcement speech and claimed it had been replaced with a 15% flat tax rate, he failed to deliver the promise to balance the budget because it is impossible to cut taxes, raise military spending and balance the budget, we need to cut taxes and spending, and this is something the administration failed to understand! Rubio said in he's announcement speech: "we created over 9 million new jobs", a fake statistic that he clearly created, many fonts show that between 2017 and 2019, 1.1 million jobs were created, not 9 million, Rubio often claimed Obamacare had been repealed before the midterms, a big lie he couldn't prove and to not admit that he's wrong he only deny the truth with half facts, he said that it couldn't be repealed after the midterms because 3 Republicans voted against the repeal, but they voted against the repeal in 2017, and not now in 2019, all the credible news outlets say things like "In a late night Senate Republicans at long last made good on a seven year promise to Repeal The Affordable Care Act, A.K.A. Obamacare", Rubio refuses to acknowledge this, he also refuses to acknowledge that it wasn't a full repeal, but a partial repeal, most news outlets have texts like "analysts, and even some Republicans have criticized the vote, citing a lack of substance or clear prerogative in terms of replacing the healthcare law. Others, have criticized the vote as being nothing more than a political measure, aided to boost President Rubio's primary campaign against Governor Gregg Abbott, Congressman Justin Amash, and Mr. Richard Spencer"

President Rubio ended up providing amnesty to illegal immigrants, he says that he reinforced the border and this is true, but he doesn't acknowledge that this doesn't change the fact he provided what many consider amnesty, and Rubio has always during the 2016 campaign said that he was against amnesty! He also failed to give us a new version of the TPP, and instead gave us the same corporatist and secretive version of Obama, this isn't free trade, this is regulated trade, this is bad for small business and helps to create monopolies.

There are also other promises he failed, like auditing the FED, something he only made now in an unconstitutional way, with executive orders, and he only made this now in the last minute to win voters, the current administration has failed in the last 3 years and we can't tolerate more failures and last minute accomplishments to win voters.

Your response, Mr. President?

[Rubio's answer]

Mr. Shapiro, you are supporting net neutrality in addition of suggesting to increase America's corporate tax rate from 20 % to 24 %, both ideas that most of Republicans and conservatives oppose because of their belief that this would be a threat to free market. How can you assure that your ideas will not diminish free market and will not kill jobs?

[Shapiro's answer]

Your response, Mr. President.

[Rubio's answer]

Your response, Congressman Amash.

Amash: I honestly think Mr. Shapiro is wrong, very wrong about the economy, first let's talk about net neutrality, what Mr. Shapiro wants is a regulation to ensure that ISPs will provide data equally to everyone, but this is the wrong way to solve the problem, the whole problem was created because of government regulations over the creation of ISPs, with these regulations over the creation of ISPs, the government ended up creating monopolies, and because of this, now the ISPs could, in theory, now limit the connection of some websites or users, there wouldn't be any penalties in the end because they are state sponsored monopolies, but a regulation is the wrong way to end this problem, by imposing regulations, everyone will have an equal service, and this way, there won't be any reason to people to go to new companies! A regulation to impose net neutrality is like throwing gasoline to end a fire! What we need is to end all the regulations over ISPs and let the internet be truly free! Small ISPs will be a viable option because they will be able to provide a better service than big ISPs!

Now on the issue of taxes, Mr. Shapiro doesn't understand is that by rising taxes, we will only make companies have less money to invest in their business and create jobs! By rising taxes we are only helping job creation to become lower and our economy to prosper less! What we need is to abolish the IRS, lower taxes even more and move towards the end of the 16th amendment and the income tax!

To all the candidates. Recently, liberal Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is considering retirement due to health problems. Who do you have in mind as potential replacement of Justice Kennedy?

Amash: Before answering the question, I want to say that I respect Justice Kennedy a lot, and I might not think that he's views are perfect, but I absolutely think that he's service in the Supreme Court was for the good of the country. I seek to appoint someone who will interpret the constitution how our founding fathers did, looking to always promote the liberty of Americans, and I do have some names that I could end up choosing like former congressman Tom Campbell, professor Jonathan Turley, Randy Barnett and others...

Closing statements

Amash: 243 years ago, our founding fathers, the people who begun the fight for our liberty chose the name of our nation! They fought against tyranny, against the high taxes and for the liberty and privacy of all the people! Today, our government is getting bigger and our rights and the constitution are being broken! I have always voted in the limits of the constitution, I have always fought for a small government and our rights, I have always fought for small taxes and I hope you give me a chance when the time to vote comes.
