So he's out for 2016. Given his previous comments about elective leadership, he'll be retired at 50.

Is there any reason why he can't run as Ways and Means chair in 2016 or 2020?

Can't do both simultaneously, nor is he the type to try. It would look pretty bad if he jumped over someone more senior (whose name escapes me ATM) just to get a title which he had no intention of really using. After getting a rarer-than-unicorns waiver for Budget last year. Even though he said he'll "take a hard look at it" after the midterms, that probably meant no. No prep, no campaigning apart from one Branstad event, no political people, etc. But it still begs the question of why he accepted Veep if he didn't at least entertain the WH thought at one point.

Maybe being involved in a campaign (even only as the VP candidate) caused him to lose interest.  Assuming he won the primaries, that would ensure almost two years of constant campaigning, scrutiny, and travel.  I'm sure he realizes this, and may have just to decided to further himself in other ways.

Here's a Hill article saying the same thing. Family is also a major factor. His allies don't rule out a future run but by then he'll be a figure of the past rather than present, particularly after W&M is up. Looks like he'll retire at 50 after all.

If Romney had been elected, Ryan could have spent 8 years as a key member of the Romney administration, then entered the 2020 primary as the frontrunner. Even if (as did happen) Romney lost, Ryan could just keep his House seat and boost his national profile a bit.

If Ryan ran for president now, he'd risk giving up his House seat just so that he could endure a punishing Republican primary that he probably wouldn't win.

I think he sees his future in the House and wants to be Speaker one day. But he's still young. He could still run for state-wide office one day such as Senator or Governor and still be a Presidential candidate in the future.

I don't see why Ryan has to retire at 50. He could be building up to a career as a House leader, possibly even Speaker (not that I want that).

My theory has always been that he'll run for President in like 2028 or 2032 and lose, thus being remembered as a far less respectable version of Bob Dole.
