The difference isn't necessarily what they'd vote for as much as it is how motivated they are to vote. Gay marriage supporters who aren't gay themselves don't have nearly the motivation to go to the polls just on that issue as anti-marriage supporters do. Religious fundamentalists vote in high numbers.

As do old people.   Young 18 year olds don't.
