After losing both Iowa and New Hampshire, Mo Udall decides to drop out of the race for the Democratic nomination and endorses Senator Kennedy.  "Today I decide to leave the Presidential race and endorse Senator Ted Kennedy.  He will lead our party toward victory in November against President Reagan."

Total delegates so far:

Republican delegates:
Reagan-39 delegates
Ford-34 delegates

It's a close race for the Republicans this year.

It's kind of funny having two Presidents go at it, repeating the same conflict from only four years ago. It's kind of like Roosevelt vs. Taft except Ford doesn't have the personal popularity or legacy that Roosevelt had.

Yeah I know.  I just thought that Ford would give Reagan a run for his money in the economy he was facing.

Kennedy states "We're on a roll here."  However we shall see if his lead stays.  Democrats could get their filibuster majority back this fall in the Senate as well as have a substantial lead in the House.

With just two weeks left in the Democratic primaries who will become the victor?  While this is going on President Reagan states "The Democrats aren't sure what kind of nominee they want this year.  Either way they both want to spend unlike me who wants to conserve."

No one has the necessary number of delegates.  Polls show Jackson could do better against Reagan than Kennedy could and so some are suggesting voting for Jackson at the Convention.  Kennedy feels that it should be the voice of the public who chooses not the delegates therefore he should be the nominee.

DNC chair John C. White had a meeting with Kennedy and Jackson discussing the potential of not having a brokered Convention.  White asked the candidates to maybe come up with a deal.  Kennedy said if he couldn't be the nominee he'd want a big role in the Jackson administration.  Jackson said if he couldn't be the nominee he'd want to be on the ticket with Kennedy.

Wait and see what happens.

The Democrats decide to have a Kennedy/Jackson ticket.  The decision was made because of Jackson's age.  Therefore Ted Kennedy will be the Democratic nominee for President and Scoop Jackson will be the Democratic nominee for Vice President.

Ted Kennedy resigns as Senate Majority Leader in order to concentrate more on his candidacy.  Robert Byrd is selected by the Democrats to be Majority Leader.
