The five I listed above appear to be it (though I'm certainly open to corrections). All five are rural mining communities and traditionally Democratic but appear to have broken against Gore for whatever reason. All of them voted for Bill Clinton both times and for Carter both times, and all but one (Rowan) voted for Dukakis in 1988. Iron, Wolfe and Menifee even voted for Mondale in 1984.
That's strange, especially since Gore performed better in Kentucky than Kerry.
Yeah, I don't have a good explanation. I was really surprised to find any Kentucky counties on this list; I thought the Upper Midwest was a much more likely location and would not have thought there were any Bush -> Kerry counties in Kentucky.
There were 6 Bush -> Kerry counties in Kentucky.
However, 3 of them ended up voting McCain, which is the truly strange part.
